I know that the ugrad ling program at SC is one of the best in the country. I was wondering if anyone is majoring in it, has taken any ling classes, or just had anything to share about it. I was thinking about doing it with a concentration in computational, but I don't know.

Also, I was looking at the course catalog and apparently Computer Science 101 is closed to non-Baskin majors. How is that supposed to work if I want to do what I mentioned?

I’m thinking about majoring/minoring in linguistics too, but with a concentration in either psycholinguistics or applied linguistics, not computational. I’ve only ever taken a fairly introductory course at a local JC, but I liked it a lot…I just know that I’m particularly bad at the type of empirical skills that computational linguistics demands (or at least seemed to demand based on what one of the UCSC advisors told me when I went to visit), hence either a psych. or applied concentration. That’s not to say that linguistics overall doesn’t require math or science based skills, just that I think the two I’m interested in seem to need it less.

Of course I could be completely wrong and screw myself over, but we’ll see.

Maybe that class was closed at the time? Have you checked the new course catalog? Try emailing the department, they’re really good about answering questions.
