Reposting the original post:
Here is a one-stop list of some of the exceptional & unique aspects at some BS, that don’t readily pop up on the BS search sites like TABS or Boardingschoolrview.

PLEASE ADD TO THIS LIST

And now my 2 cents worth: The idea is to list traits that are uncommon and/or not easily searchable at a site like boardingschoolreview.com. Not trying to knock down anybody’s ideas, just trying to keep it manageable and true to purpose.

I changed the FA criteria to “>45%”

List of Exceptional & Unique Offerings at some BS
Reposting the original post:
Here is a one-stop list of some of the exceptional & unique aspects at some BS, that don’t readily pop up on the BS search sites like TABS or Boardingschoolrview.

PLEASE ADD TO THIS LIST

Note: I took Putney, Madeira, Concord and Deerfield off the list for need blind admissions. Those schools make admissions and financial aid decisions separately, as do many other schools, but that does not make them need blind in terms of their ultimate acceptance list; need blind means that every student accepted is guaranteed grant-based aid to meet his or her financial need. Those schools do not guarantee that. Need blind admission is exceedingly rare.

A couple of thoughts…the “100% Boarding” list seems to have expanded exponentially, mostly with the addition of military, super specialized, super small, or alternative-type schools…I am resisting the temptation to cull that back down to SAS, SPS, and Episcopal.

I don’t know who added Lawrenceville to the “strong fencing programs” list, but I respectfully disagree (based on what I know about the girls programs in the area).

Finally, a note on formatting. For major sections, the header should be all-caps with spaces in between. For sub sections, all-caps, with a colon, list schools under the header separated by space-asterisk-space. At least that’s how an early poster chose to format and it works.

I think that would be reasonable 7 dad. In general , I think we should stick to posting about schools about which we have some kind of insider knowledge, rather than copying from other sites. I’m not opposed to including things that show up elsewhere, but how about we say the knowledge of those things must be direct?

I’d like to change the sacred text category to something lint wresting/ unusual religion courses. Would that be okay?

I disagree with classicalmama’s definition of need-blind admissions. Need-blind admissions means you are accepted or not, regardless of your financial status. The people deciding whether to admit you are not privy to financial aid applications. Classicalmama, I think your interpretation would be better defined as guaranteed aid for admitted students which is in fact exceedingly rare and which would warrant its own category.

Wikipedia separates the two concepts into “need-blind” and “full-need” policies. You can have one without the other or you can have both in the same school.

I propose restoring the “need-blind admissions” category to the standard definition of admissions and financial aid decisions being decided separately, i.e. blindly, and adding Putney, Madeira, Concord and Deerfield back in.

I would like to see “need-blind” and “full-need” as separate categories. Don’t have time to do it right now and will await others’ feedback.

alooknac: I read the Wikipedia article, and I think there’s an important difference between need blind as it is defined by prep schools and by boarding schools. The need blind boarding schools claim that (a) their admit process is their admit process; they do not waitlist or deny students because of financial aid AND (b) they will meet the full needs of students with grant-based aid.

This is, I think where colleges and boarding schools part company. Since many (though not all) boarding schools promise that all their aid will be in the form of grants, they cannot admit a student and then offer a combination of grants and loans as colleges can. So they are forced to waitlist or outright deny some students for financial reasons, whereas a need-blind college might offer admission without offering good, grant-based aid. There are prep schools that do that too, of course, but the schools we commonly call need blind here on CC–and the boarding schools that refer to themselves as need blind–offer full aid to every student in need that they admit. So, in Wikipedia terms, they are both need blind AND full need.

I think you’re elevating schools that do something that I think is not “exceptional or unique” at all–Concord, for example, accepts students in need of FA but puts them on a FA waitlist–generating all sorts of false hope that seldom comes to anything. Or–in the case of SPS or Exeter or Groton–they tentatively accept someone round one, only to reject or waitlist him/her in round 2 because of FA. It’s a necessary evil, but is it something we want to celebrate on this thread?

At any rate, I do think you’re moving away from the traditional CC interpretation of need blind–but let’s see what others think.

I don’t think it is helpful for this forum to use a different definition of “need-blind” than the schools themselves. Here are two direct quotes from public webpages of schools we are discussing:

Concord: “Admissions applications are considered on a need-blind basis.”

Madeira: “Admission at Madeira is ‘need-blind’ (i.e. the Admission Committee is not aware of a family’s financial status when making admissions decisions).”

I propose two separate categories for this post. We can add a caveat: “Need-blind admissions means the admisison decision is completely separate from the FA decision. It does NOT mean that if you’re accepted your need will automatically be met.”

For some of us the two categories have their relevance. Until recently, even though I’ve been through two rounds of BS appliactions and FA applications, I myself did not realize how many schools let FA affect whether they accept you.

I agree that it’s better for us to begin to use the term more accurately if only to make us more aware of what college admissions entails. I still think need blind is deceptive wording in that case as it falsely separates FA from the admit process. But it’s better to use the right terms so we know what we’re getting into…

The question remains whether the schools that offer need blind admissions in the real sense of the term are unique enough to be included on this list. I think we’d end up with another squash court list! But yes, let’s call those schools full need/need blind schools for the sake of accuracy.

And I’d like to make another request that people not plug in names of all the schools on another list somewhere that meet a certain criteria. I think we should stick with what we know.

I revised the need-blind category and added full-need. Restored Milton to the diversity category.

Might I suggest someone work on the “diversity” category? Lawrenceville is 48% what? There’s socioeconomic diversity, racial diversity, country of origin, etc. What are we measuring? Students of color and international students are pretty easily researched via boardingschoolreview.com. Maybe set a cutoff point so we only list the top runners?
