I agree with Secret Asian Man on this. With school all day, a couple of hours of homework, work for fifteen hours, ECs for ten to fifteen hours, and time for sleep and chores, there isn’t a lot of time to dedicate to writing excellent essays. Sometimes it’s nice to have another match that doesn’t require as much work. And starting in the summer is one thing, but it’s a little late for that now and sometimes there are other obligations.

Following is a list of schools with no essay or short answer on the supplement. I have checked all of the 2009 supplements on Common App. Schools with optional essays for the main Arts & Science college are NOT included (if essay is only for engineering or other speciality, this will be noted).

I’ve checked every school listed in this thread thusfar; if it’s not listed below, you can assume that there IS an essay or short answer of some sort.

Boston College
Dartmouth College (required peer recommendation; actually a national U)
Middlebury College
Vanderbilt University
University of Vermont (is this a “top” school?)
Washington University in St. Louis
Wesleyan University (actually an LAC)
