Hey, I’m not saying it shouldn’t be up there lol. I won Silver in Nationals last year but it never occured to me that it was a big deal. My school hadn’t even heard of it. Then again, my school probably hasn’t hear of 99% of the acronyms you have listed above, so I dunno.

Bah, National Honor Roll is only good for the scholarships…

excuse my satire

where would u guys rank getting jshs finalists and qualifying for nationals?

what about an international award?? i did an international bilingual speech contest, but it was in 8th grade. i competed against students from china, singapore, etc. would that make an impact on admissions or no??

Negative 1 could be “school drunk”. There was a kid in our grade who I swear drank beer for breakfast. The dude had a six pack seemingly every night and also stole boxed wine from an old folks home that he worked at all the time. Everyone called him “Beer” instead of his real name and even the teachers knew who “Beer” was. His actions showed–he made some of the stupidest moves around during school but he sure was funny. Plus, when sober, “Beer” was a pretty nice guy.

Would you guys think that governor’s school would go under the 6 category for selective summer programs?

yes ptang. i think that ssp has to be 7

what about TIP progams particularly field studies?

So if we were to miss the USABO semifinal cutoff by one point, could we put that on our app?

I think there’s a lot of other accomplishments that could go on the list, but might just clog it. For instance:

being a soloist with a large symphony orchestra

being published (whether creative writing or scientific)

becoming an accomplished artist (maybe having a joint gallery show?)

having a record deal

rising actor/actress at a playhouse

just… putting out some ideas that might not have specific “awards” attached to them, but I doubt anyone would claim that, for example, publishing a novel would not be considered significant.

and aren’t TIP programs just like CTY?

I don’t know, belonging to a species other than Homo sapiens might give you an edge… URM, baby =)

Simply doing NIH research isn’t on par with going to RSI. You have to actually get something big, and very few do. Also, there’s no such designation as USAMO semifinalist.

Oh yeah-- so would science olympiad medals mean more if you’re from a competitive state like NJ or NY?

+100 - Belonging to a species other than Homo sapiens

Where you place getting published?

Presidential Scholar is NOT a 9. At best, it’s right there at number 7 because Presidential Scholar is basically equivalent to perfect test scores.

It also depends on the school. TASP is certainly more appealing to some schools than others.
