Living near campus

I'll be attending Saint Louis University in the fall to finish a degree and I was curious as to the apartment situation near campus. I'm 24 years old and feel a bit out of place living near dorms and/or in campus owned housing, so I'll be looking for a single room (or studio) apartment nearby that isn't in a dangerous area and isn't to far of a drive. Money is an issue, but I work full time and can afford more than a typical college student (looking in the 700-900 range, although cheaper is always better). If anyone has any advice, please let me know!

Some of the apartments we saw on our tour looked really cool. From the outside at least.

My daughter, a junior at SLU, has lived for almost two years in a spacious, relatively inexpensive (less than double dorm room) apartment right across the street from the western end of the main campus. She’s within walking distance of cafes, supermarket, light rail, movie theater, etc. Go to apts/housing on craigslist and type in words such as “SLU” or “Lindell” (one of the main streets near SLU) and a top dollar amount to see what’s in your price range. That’s how she found her place.
