Living off campus

Do the majority of the kids stay on campus for at least 2 years? When do kids typically move off? Thanks.

S is a sophomore who will move off campus next year. He has a few friends in his class who did it this year, but most are waiting until they’re juniors. That’s just his circle of friends, though, and I’m sure it varies a lot.

My D is a freshman. She is planning on living on campus next year. Other kids she knows that are sophomores now all stayed on campus this year. They are moving off campus in their junior year.

most of my sophomore D’s friends are moving off campus next year, but she flat-out refuses to do so.

The term “off campus” housing at UD is somewhat of a misnomer. There are a number of apartment sites/complexes available that are literally “on campus” as far as location is concerned. My D lived in an apartment on Main Street almost right across from the new bookstore for her Jr. and Sr. years. She lived in a sorority her sophomre year a block and a half from Trabant. A number of the apartments available are actually located better than many dorms are as far as getting to classrooms is concerned. As a result of this many of these apartments don’t require a student to have a car because of their location. My guess would be that overall about 1/2 of freshman and 3/4 of sophomores move into off campus housing following these years. While there are pros and cons to both living situations I feel living in off campus housing can help prepare students for living in the “real world” following graduation. Just a suggestion for anyone who decides to move to off campus housing. You might want to check out the website of the Off Campus Meal Plan (OCMP) Program. This program allows students to obtain meals at many off the eateries/restaurants in Newark, including most all of them on Main Street. It would take too long to try and explain this plan here-check out the website. My D utililzed this and I feel we saved a little money by doing so.

Agree with above poster, the off campus housing for my child was much closer to campus than Christiana towers sophomore year and freshman year housing, both years a bike was needed. Even the single house rentals are all located within the immediate blocks of campus.
