LOA Question

Marines4me~It sounds like you have a great back-up plan! I wish we had an acceptance or two here but my son's won't come until spring. I'm trying to talk him into applying to another saftey that gives a 3 week turn around on the admissions process. He has had several send him application emails. If you can be happy with your saftey then the rest just gets better!

I'd be surprised if you didn't get in the Academy. I wonder why they all aren't recruiting you for sports if AFA is? Hang in there. My son has a friend similar to your situation. She is applying to AFA with Navy a second choice. The good news is that we live close but in different congressional districts but sometimes it's hard. Best wishes!

Marines4me, Congrats on the full ride PLUS room and board, AND the laptop! That's super!!! I've still got my fingers crossed for you at the Academy.

Awww, thanks guys. sniff I'm so glad I found this board. Ya'll provide such emotional support, and it's awesome that I can get my questions answered!

I'm very proud of you;)

Bawl Thanks mom! :)

On a side note, who's tired of running obsessively to the mailbox every day to see if anything from anywhere has come? Or maybe that's just me... lol

Good news, guys! I talked to a BGO that is in charge of Texas (I have a friend that lives there that used to be a BGO.) He called up Cpt. Leahy, and he said that I have a "strong" file. He wouldn't say anything else besides that.

But here's the good part: the BGO from Texas said that the letter means I'm triple qualified. He said that out of the 300 candidates he has in Texas, only 14 are QQQed. Because of this letter, apparently I'm in the top 5 percent. Basically, that 2500 of which they choose 1800 from. And, I'm still not out of the running for an LOA! He said that from the day I got that letter I was eligible for an LOA. I don't really understand why that would be, but I just nod and smile. :)

And here's another good thing! I got home today and checked my missed calls. One from the Naval Academy popped up! There wasn't a message, but I think my mom answered the phone. Unfortunately, she's not home right now, so I can't ask her! Argh, the wait's going to kill me! Woohoo!

marines4me:

Are you refering to a letter from the admissions board that says (I don't remember the exact words) - "The Admissions Board has reviewed your file and has determined that you are qualified to compete for a nomination. This is a major step in obtaining a nomination, but does not guarantee a nomination." then goes on about updating th eAcademy on changes, etc. My son received this letter a week or two ago and called the Regional Director who told him that it meant he was triple qualified.

Parent 0110 I think you mean "qualified to compete for an "appointment", not "nomination"." If so, it means that the next hurdle is the MOC nomination. Great news for all letter recipients.
marines4me: The 2500 or so candidates to whom you refer had their nominations as well as being triple qualified. Good Luck
CM

Parent0110, that is the letter I'm refering to.

CM: You're right, of course. But it's one step closer to getting an appointment. :)

marines4me:
Absolutely a positive! I did not intend to take the wind out of your sails! I did want to make sure that you were aware of the next step. Being triple qualified is an absolute must as one of the "tickets" for appointment. I wish you well in your nomination interviews, and hope you are successful in your quest. Congrats on your scholarship!
CM

Marines4me, that is SOOOOOO great! I KNEW you'd be triple Q'd!

Candidatemom:

You are correct, I meant to say compete for an appointment. Looking at the profile of the class of 2008, it looks to me that receiving this letter puts candidates into an fairly elite group. It also appears that if my son can get a nomination, the statisitics are in his favor for being offered an appointment. The class of '08 had only 1,951 candidates that were triple qualified and had nominations. Out of that, 1,4672 received offers of appointment. My son's interviews are not until the beginning of December. Both the Congressman and Senators have stated in their correspondence to send them copies of any LOA's. What is your opinion on sending them a copy of this triple qualified letter? In my mind, I think they would want to know that a nomination wouldn't be "wasted" on a candidate that hasn't been qualified yet? What do you think?

Parent 0110: Definitely send your MOC a copy of your qualified letter along with any other new information which could impact their choice for nomination.

Modesty must sometimes take a backseat to the truth.

Parent 0110:
Here's my two cents.
If your son has already been selected for a nomination interview, then I would bring the qualification letter to the interview, and present it to the committee. The letter may be a deciding factor in whether the nomination is offered to your son.
If your son has not been granted an interview as of yet, then I would mail a copy to the committee as a file update (receipt requested), hoping it would influence the committee to select him for a nomination interview.

Here is the rationale:
If he is already selected for interview, the letter may be lost in the bundle of recommendations and paperwork in his file, and might not have an impact. Better to present it personally, as it makes a greater impact on the committee.
If he has not been granted an interview, then mail a copy ASAP (receipt requested) and hope that the letter will convince the committee that your son is the candidate who should represent the district, and be awarded the interview, and hopefully the nomination. You may not get another chance.
Just my opinion.
Good Luck in all of this,
CM

candidatemom and aspen:

Thank you for your input. I will make sure he takes a copy of the letter to his interviews. He has one on Monday evening and the other is not until December. I will have him mail a copy to the Congressman' s office, since that is the December interview. I'll throw out another question. Since Monday evening he will be interviewed by a review board, should he take multiple copies of the letter and give it to each person on the board? or just present one copy to the chairperson?

Woohoo! I got an LOA from West Point today! I'm so excited! I've been running around screaming the past hour or so! YES!!! I keep having to tell myself to breath! The letter says the only thing I have to do now is get a nomination. They reserved a cadetship for me! AHHHH!

Phew, now I don't know WHAT to do! Well, I haven't been accepted to Navy, but I'm not really sure which one I'd rather go to. Lots of tradition/history/structure/prestige at West Point, or a more diluted but just as good version of that at Navy? More sleep at WP, or a more "normal" college experience at Navy? Aw, heck. I don't care right now! I'm just celebrating!

More sleep at WP? Is that because you don't have to stand watch? I've never heard someone report that they got much sleep at WP.

Hah, I don't know if it's "much" sleep. Just "more" sleep. Plebes are allowed to sleep whenever they have free time during the day, something Navy plebes are not allowed to do.

congrats Marines!!!

Don't look for WP to be more "diluted". :)

As far as sleep goes, well....you better talk to a WP cadet first. You may be suffering from a bit of Navy bias! Remember which academy the others modeled themselves after! Hope you get what you truly want though.

Congrats Marines4Me!!
