I will be living in Ellicott next Fall. Are students allowed to loft their beds? I heard that you have to pay extra to have a company give you the materials to make standard bed into loft bed. Is this true?

I remember seeing it online that they cost anywhere between $100 and $150.

Yes - you can loft your bed but UMD only allows you to rent these from bedloft.com

Thank you. I think it would be worth the additional cost…the dorms seem pretty small.

Yes - for sure it is worth the cost as it gives you quite a bit more room to store items, etc. We had found a lot of good info on the move-in site for 2010; they will probably update during the summer: [Fall 2010 Move-In: Items to Bring](http://www.resnet.umd.edu/movein/items/)

Now - I will say on the UMD site they also show some dorms with wooden bunks/lofts; however, not sure if the Ellicott village has those. [Residential Facilities - Beds](http://www.drf.umd.edu/buildings/beds.cfm)

BTW- glad to see you have made your final selection; my daughter chose UMD as well. I had a feeling you would probably end up at Maryland…

Thank you. Decision was easy after I visited UMD and engineering department. Was able to meet with people within dept and honors program and got all my questions answered. At no other school was I given this type of attention and help. I will be far from home but I am very excited about being able to experience the East Coast. College Confidential has been very helpful with my decision and answering questions about the school.

You can also buy a set of plastic bed riser cups that go under each post of the bed to make the bed taller to put storage containers under the bed. The rooms each have room for the bed, desk, dresser, and closet on each side. Been to other campuses with smaller dorm rooms. Didn’t loft bed, but still had room for refrig, in room.

On move in day there is a supplier with a truck and you can buy rugs for your room.

You’ll get info about it this summer, but if you order the loft ahead of time, it “should” be set up for you when you move in. If you order it after you get to UMD, it can take a week or so, depending on their staffing and availability of the beds. It’s a company that contracts out to several schools, btw.

How much space (height specifically) is under a lofted bed? Would you be able to fit the desk underneath?

@foodandpuppies Yes, that’s the main reason students do it - so they can create more space in their rooms.
