My nephew is coming in as a new Freshman and definitely wants to loft his bed for more space. I hear that there is a lottery for lofting kits through the University, but can he bring one in? Does anyone know what a lofting kit consists of or where to get one?

My S will be a freshman at UCSC this fall and living in Cowell College. We were at the school last week and visited one of the Cowell dorms. We were told by one of the Cowell administrators that lofting was not permitted. You might want to check with the administator of the college to which your nephew was assigned. The school seems to be very responsive to questions.

I'm pretty sure loft beds are only for people who live in triple and quad rooms. So if your nephew lives in a double or single I don't think they will allow him to loft his bed. Although if you contact the housing people when you move in they should allow you to raise your bed to make more space.

Thanks...Guess he will have to sort it out when he gets there. I appreciate the responses.

although it's "not allowed," plenty of people get the lofting blocks from bed bath and beyond / linens 'n' things / target /etc and just use those.

I think, but am not certain only Cowell has non loft beds. Cowell also has the smallest rooms. The newer colleges have bigger, more modern rooms. That said, I'm a Cowell kid. I loved my double, it was cozy and felt like home. I had plenty of room for my stuff and also enough "personal" space. Triples seem OK too. Quads...are a little cramped.
