For my junior year I have the option of studying abroad in either London or Madrid. I want to study abroad in Madrid because I really love Spanish and it could help strengthen my skills but it would also be really difficult communicating. But also I have a fascination with London and it would be easy to communicate. But I've also heard the London is all grey and depressing. So CC, if I had to study abroad somewhere where should I go?

Isn’t the study abroad experience as much about the college you enroll in abroad as it is about the country? Check out the universities you’ll study in and see which ones excite you more.

London is a big, vibrant city. Yes, the weather can be dreary, but I wouldn’t call the city depressing because of it.

If you are majoring or minoring in Spanish, then I would suggest going to Madrid, because immersion will improve your communication skills in leaps and bounds.

If you love to travel, there are some things you should consider about both places. Spain is part of the Schengen region, meaning that you could travel between Madrid and several other European countries without a different visa. If you’re in London, you can’t do that because the UK issues a separate visa. But there is so much to see there, so you won’t really run out of places to visit within the country.

I would go to Madrid if you want to practice Spanish. Many people become fluent after living in Madrid for a few months. However, if you don’t want to learn Spanish, or you feel more comfortable going to a country that speaks English, go to London. Either way, you’ll have a great experience.
