<p>yes. If your essay is obviously too long, they may either stop reading at the cutoff point, or randomly cut words and then read it.<br>

<p>I honestly don't think it would matter; the 500 word limit was created by the Common App organization, not by Harvard. Harvard accepts all this supplementary information as well, so what's the harm in reading an extra 100 words of a required component, that is, if they even notice? (Do you think they'll really count the words anyway?)</p>
