Hello everyone! I’m a current student at LIU Post and I would be happy to answer any questions you may still have
I’m just finishing up my freshman year and my class is very diverse. I’m from the Philadelphia area and there are a lot of students from Long Island/NYC area, but we also have students from across the state and the country. There are students from Michigan, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington, Wyoming, Iowa, and even one from Hawaii!
Hi! I was just accepted to LIU Post’s musical theatre program after a walk in audition at NYC Unifieds! I was wondering how many people audition, how many get in, and then how many people choose to go to LIU Post for Musical Theatre. Thank you!
Hi! Can anyone describe the dance training provided?
@Macsdreams I really don’t have alot of info on this, but I am also curious as my D was also accepted into their MT program. We may be visiting soon. When she auditioned, David talked to several students along with their parents afterward and I remembering him telling the kids that although the school doesnt REQUIRE alot of dance, they are looking for students who will push and take above and beyond what the minimum requirements are. I did find this post on another thread. Hope it helps!

Hi, my daughter got accepted in the LIU-MT BFA program and we are planning a visit soon…any feedback on campus life and the MT program would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
@AngelaB and @Onourown The reason that they don’t require a lot of dance is because of university policy that changed recently. In an attempt to up their graduation rates, all programs have been forced to reduced required to 120 or less. (At least that is what I was told.)
David Hugo and Cara Gargano (Head of BFA Dance program) revamped the MT program and made cuts in required dance to meet the 120 credit goal. They petitioned to get the credits raised for BFA programs, but no success. That’s why David says they “encourage” students to take more dance. He can’t require it - much as he would like to.
The one concession that LIU made was to remove the cap on number of credits allowed per semester. So BFA students can take 2 or more dance classes every semester without worry of having to pay extra for the credits. They can also audit dance classes.
My son and I just came back from visiting. He loved it. I posted more in another thread. He has two other schools to choose from, but we left after sitting in on a freshman acting class, and getting a tour. As we were getting into the car, he was pretty pumped and said he could definitely see himself there. It was quiet on campus (weather was lousy and some Greek Life festivities had been cancelled) but the MT building was hopping with students and faculty all getting ready for senior showcase. It was worth the visit (though the timing and the weather on a Friday afternoon made the drive home longer than planned). Good luck with your decision!
Here’s an article about LIU Post’s College of Arts.
My son was accepted to the Theater Tech production BFA program for class of 2021. Unfortunately, the only way to manage it financially was for him to live at home and take loans on top of that, so he opted for a state school which we can afford without debt.
We know the campus well. The school is very pretty. The facilities are nice, though my son said that the facilities at the state school he is attending are better. Everyone we met or dealt with was lovely and I am sorry to give up the perk of having one guidance person assigned to help you with everything but it wasn’t worth paying twice the cost. The kids my son and I met there were all really enthusiastic about the program.
I feel badly that my son can’t attend this program and I wish all of you whose children will be there the best of luck.
@techmom99 My daughter just decided to decline the LIU Post BFA MT offer. She got a good amount of scholarship money, but it was still about $6,000 more a year than another program she also likes. It was a tough decision and the college did try to meet her financial need - giving her extra money on top of her original honors & academic scholarship scholarships.
Your story, however, is another part of the reason we decided against LIU. With the free tuition offer at state colleges, we foresee declining enrollments at private colleges like LIU. With a very small endowment base, the idea that LIU might possibly be unable to operate for another four years seemed very real. And my daughter didn’t want to find herself without a college in her senior year.
My D loved the program and Dave Hugo and Cara Gargano and the campus and feels badly about turning them down.
