long story but what are my chance - nyu tisch

I graduated from high school last year. I am currently on a gap year. I am on a gap year because a month before my graduation I found out I had cancer and was unable to go to school. I just found out a week ago that I'm in remission, so I'm ready to go to school. I am applying early decision 2 for nyu tisch drama. My grades in my final year of high school suffered because of my illness. I was in the IB program but was only able to get 3 certificates because my chemo treatment interfered with the rest of my exams. (in the IB they have set dates for exams once a year) Anyways, my grade 12 average was a 81, which would be an A- in our grading system (canada). Also, I had extreme fatigue for pretty much the whole year. (my days consisted of getting up, going to school, coming home - not eating dinner - and going straight to bed) During this year I was still very active in extra curriculars, I helped with the lower school play, I was in the high school play, I was a house council member(like student council or student government) I was a house head(like in harry potter), I played 4 varsity sports, I entered a provincial french speaking competition, and I was a member of 4 committees (community and service, social, art, athletics). I also won my upper school drama award, as well as excellence in Biology and Drama. Also in previous years I took a volunteer trip to tanzania, I was selected for an exchange program in australia and more recently I have been doing some volunteering with free the children, including at we day. (free the children is the largest network of children helping children)

Also side note: I'm a lesbian and I came out a month before I found out I was sick. It was a pretty rough year, but it did make for a pretty solid personal essay so theres a plus. Anyways I'm just adding that because I know NYU likes people who are different.

I just want an opinion on what you think my chances are.
sorry for how long that was... must have gotten carried away
yayy for free healthcare

Cancer is the enemy. I don’t know how anyone could reject your application.

Congratulations on your good news!

What are you hoping to studying at Tisch? If you are required to audition or submit a portfolio, etc., that will be a major element of your application and will make it impossible for anyone to assess your chances (not that chance threads are ever useful). Be sure that your medical history and its effect on your performance in school are discussed in your counselor’s recommendation, not just in your own submission. BTW, you do know NYU’s very high costs and reputation for poor financial aid, right?

I am applying to the drama department for acting, I don’t think that part of it will be an issue. I am quite confident in my acting ability. My counselor assured me he will pay attention to my illness and my grades in his recommendation, as will my Biology teacher because it is quite evident in that course (i went from a 97% to an 89%). I am only concerned for the academic part of admissions as I’ve heard it’s 50/50 audition and academics. I realize that, and will not require financial aid.
Thanks for responding.
I should also mention that I applied early decision. I don’t know what effect that has as I am somewhat unfamiliar with the US application process.

All of the many applicants wanting to study acting at Tisch are very confident about their abilities, and all have a significant amount of experience in the field, but only a small percentage are accepted. You’ll be facing serious competition. I’d say the talent side of your application will be the far steeper hill to climb. Best of luck.
