Interesting. Longy has a long history, and has had some incredible faculty, and seemed to fill a particular niche.

Recognizing that negotiations are still in progress, it would be helpful if perhaps N8Ma make a few observations or comments.

This has been in the works for a very long time. I cannot comment on most of the details, but Bard has acquired another school before–Simon’s Rock–and that school has maintained its own board, and considerable independence. There is some overlap, but essentially S-R has its own faculty, its own policies, and lives by its own rules. So we have a good track record with this sort of thing, and people shouldn’t be overly worried. I was completely unaware of the union angle, and I think that’s being overplayed in the article. Bard’s acquisition of Longy has been in the works for a very long time, and it was not in response to any action taken by the faculty to organize.

I am looking forward to the collaboration. It makes a lot of sense, for both institutions. In particular, we are eager to expand our MAT program (we now offer it in the Hudson Valley, NYC, in California, and in Palestine). I was hoping the announcement of the Longy acquisition would take place after the details were finalized, but what can you do.

Some deep background trivia–Mannes approached Bard around 10 years ago (before my time but it was some time in the early part of the decade), expressing an interest in leaving the New School and joining Bard as its conservatory. This led to talks of a full-on merger between Bard and all of The New School. For various reasons, this fell through, but it’s what led in part to Bard faculty Robert Martin and Melvin Chen’s idea to start a conservatory at Bard.
