Alright, I'm a senior in high school headed off to Wharton next year. Not this summer, but next summer, I am going to try and land at least some kind of internship. For my first summer in college, I sort of want to get an internship in my home town, which luckily has a range of choices in the financial industry (though it's no NY, SF, etc.)

I know this is all presumptive, but say I choose to intern at a consulting/investment company which manages 150B+ in assets and has it's own index etc. (this company's flagship is in my home town) rather than go to NY to intern at a BB or boutique or something. Would this necessarily hurt my resume, or would it just not be helped it as much if I had gone to NY? This might be splitting hairs, but I'm just weighing my (potential) options in the future.

So, let me get this straight. You’re a HS senior and going to Wharton in September. In summer 2012, you want to land an internship, right? Opportunities for freshman internships are extremely limited. Why, Penn doesn’t even keep track of those like they do for sophomore, juniors, and seniors. (Saw something about Penn’s internships recently, but can’t find it now.) And would it hurt your resume if you stayed in your home town instead of going to NYC? Just wait until you have all the options to consider. You’re getting ahead of yourself.

Yeah I had a feeling I was getting ahead of myself. But when I talked to some current Wharton sophomores/juniors, they said it’s not too uncommon to get an internship the summer after freshman year—but yeah, I should probably wait to see what my options are come next summer.
