Looking Beyond the Rankings

<p>I may not post next week, I’ll be taking my son back to his 50-50 college, Beloit.</p>

<p>Hobart and William Smith is considered prestigious in NY, am surprised they accept over 50% of the applicants.</p>

I agree. I don’t understand people who look at acceptance rates and say “Oh look School X has over 30% acceptance rate, they must be bad or worse than school Y which has lower acceptance rate”</p>

<p>The Maine Maritime Academy includes majors in Power Engineering, International Business & Logistics, Marine Biology, and Marine Science as well as those related to the design and operation of marine crafts. First and third year students participate in training cruises aboard the T.S. State of Maine. Students can participate in international exchange programs with other Maritime Universities in Japan, China, Turkey, and the Ukraine. The Academy provides students with extensive Cooperative and internship opportunities. The Regiment of Midshipman is required for some majors but is optional for all students interested in leadership and management.</p>

<p>The Winter term (January term) at DePauw University in Indiana allows students to try a variety of programs that they wouldn’t be able to do in a semester program. And they have exchange programs with other 4-1-4 schools, increasing the number of possibilities. Any student can use the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media resources including a radio station, newspaper, and student television. The McDermond Center for Management & Entrepreneurship is home to the Management Fellows Program and hosts a lecture series bringing nationally known speakers. Students can intern at the Prindle Institute for Ethics which hosts an annual undergraduate ethics symposium. Non-music majors can participate in the School of Music courses and ensembles.</p>

<p>The Mercyhurst University Archaeological Institute in Pennsylvania supports majors in Anthropology/Archaeology, Applied Forensic Sciences, and Geology. Students in classes and as part of research projects use the Forensic Anthropology Processing Lab and Forensic Recovery Van. The Institute for Intelligence Studies offers students the opportunity to work on projects such as assessing the threat of genocide against the Bahai population in Iran. Students learn public polling working with the Mercyhurst Center for Applied Politics. The Grotto Dining Room and Lab is a student run restaurant for Hospitality Management majors. Communication students are responsible for fund-raising events, department websites, and producing campus tour videos in the television station.</p>

<p>First-year students at Michigan State University can take Freshman Seminars Abroad the summer before they start at the University. Locations have included China, Italy, and South Africa. Each year, 200 eligible freshman in the Honors College are appointed to the Professorial Assistantship Program to work with faculty related to research or innovative teaching. Undergraduates can search for research and creative opportunities through the Venture database. MSU also offers a Summer Research Opportunities Program that involves undergraduate students in graduate-level research. The Lyman Briggs College is a residential college devoted to the study of natural sciences and their impact on society. Students take specific sequences of Chemistry and Physics courses as well as liberal arts courses focusing on history, philosophy, and sociology of science. Two other residential colleges are The James Madison College focusing on the social sciences and the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities. Business students can specialize in Entrepreneurship, Environment Studies, Sales Communication, or International Business. The college also sponsors a Residential Business Program. Engineering students also have the opportunity for a Residential Experience that includes a variety of activities to develop an understanding of the engineering profession. Engineering students are also encouraged to study abroad in Australia, Denmark, Germany, South Korea, and Tanzania.</p>

<p>Students at Saint Vincent College in Pennsylvania have the opportunity to become Fred Rogers Scholars, a program sponsored by the Fred Rogers Center. Scholars will travel and develop research projects with a focus on children’s studies and media. The Loe China Studies Center sponsors study abroad, student research through an endowment, and scholarships. Students can attend lectures at the Center for Political and Economic Thought as well as participate in research and education programs. St. Vincent has a collaborative learning program that provides interactive discussions for science courses. Participating students have the opportunity to become Emerging Research Scholars and work one-on-one with faculty and gain research experience. The Service Learning and Outreach Program offers students classes as well as volunteer opportunities.</p>

<p>Students at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles can conduct research, take classes, and plan events The Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles. The university supports undergraduate research during the school year with the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program and over the summer with the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. The Faculty in Resident Program has full-timed tenured faculty living in the student residence halls. Faculty fellows are assigned to specific residence halls to interact with students in various activities. The Center for Asian Business offers summer study scholarships to promote a deeper understanding of Korea. The Fred Kiesner Center for Entrepreneurship hosts Dinner with a Winner where highly motivated students interact with successful entrepreneurs over dinner. Students in the School of Film and Television can apply to the Incubator Lab that will allow them to enter industry with a project “in hand.” The Phage Discovery Lab offers freshman a unique mentored research experience. Business students can study abroad in Italy as part of a course on International Business Environment and Practices.</p>

<p>Potential students at Bowling Green State University in Ohio can calculate their eligibility for a freshman academic scholarship with a link from the homepage (This is especially unusual for a public university). Students can earn a full semester of credit in GeoJourney, a nine-week field/trip across the United States. The President’s Leadership Academy is a four-year leadership development program of classes, workshops, experiential learning, and community service that begins the summer before their freshman year. Business students take Applied Business Experience Lab Courses during their first three years and can work on start-ups in the Business Creativity Lab. Future teachers will benefit from the University designating Educator Preparation as one its Centers of Excellence which includes an International Democratic Education Institute and Technology and Resource Center. Architecture and Design students can take a 30 day class in London, Paris, and Rome. Bowling Green has multiple academic and theme residential learning Communities, including arts, educators, ROTC, music, and aviation. There are a number of opportunities for undergraduate research including the McNair Scholars Program, open to sophomores; Academic Investment in Math and Science; and Science, Engineering & Technology Summer Researcher program.</p>

<p>Hiram College in Ohio has just launched the Sustainability, Environment, and Engaged Design Scholars Program where scholars will develop a collaborative project, attend conferences, and participate in mentored learning experiences. Students can apply to be scholars at the Garfield Institute for Public Leadership and work on research projects and seminar series. The Center for Deciphering Life’s Languages has been nationally recognized for undergraduate involvement in genomics and bioinformatics. Students have the opportunity to intern at the Linday-Crane Center for Writing and Literature which also helps student find conferences and publications for their submissions. The Center for Integrated Entrepreneurship sponsors two Idea Competitions, E-Internships, and the Entrepreneurship Residential Learning Community. The Center for Literature and Medicine sponsors an internship with the Cleveland Clinic Bioethics Department and offers the only undergraduate major in Biomedical Humanities. Each year, Hiram explores an ethics theme across the campus connecting programs and curriculum.</p>

<p>Santa Clara University in California offers a Global Social Benefit Fellowship through the Center of Science and Technology for Social Benefit. Juniors conduct field-base study and research within a worldwide network of social entrepreneurs. Students in the Leavey School of Business have access to a variety of leadership opportunities. All business students are required to complete a Leadership Competency Certificate. The Accelerated Cooperative Education program for business students combines a liberal arts education with specialized career and academic assistance and development of professional skills. The school also offers a Business Immersion program in El Salvador. Engineering students have opportunities for hands-on experience and research in the Center for Nanostructures. Students can volunteer at the Archaeology Research Lab and work with collections, conservation, and collections management. The California Legacy Project offers interns the opportunities to organize events, create study guides, and research and write scripts for radio productions. Engineering students participate in Interdisciplinary Design Engineering and Service community-based projects as well as senior capstone design projects.</p>

<p>At New College of Florida, students receive Narrative Evaluations instead of grades which creates a non-competitive learning environment. This causes no problem for graduate school as indicated by the Wall Street Journal ranking of New College as the nation’s number two public feeder school for elite law, medical, and business schools. Instead of credit hours, students complete seven contracts before graduation that set goals and criteria for measuring success each semester. Marine Biology majors can work in one of seven research labs in the Pritzker Marine Biology Research Center or help design outreach programs for the local community. The Public Archaeology Lab provides students with the opportunity to conduct research on local and regional history as well as develop their own projects. The Student Research and Travel Grant Program supports student research, travel associated with tutorials and projects, and presentation of original work. The New College Sailing Team has over 20 sea craft in its fleet and is open to beginners. Students run the self-supporting Four Winds Caf</p>

<p>That’s pretty much it. I think I’m becoming an expert on college website design. Or at least, I know which ones I find annoying and which make it easy to find out why they’re different from other schools. You would be surprised at how many schools I don’t include because I really can’t say what’ unique/special about them.</p>

<p>Students at the University of Buffalo in New York can join Undergraduate Academies that combine living and learning communities. The four academies, Civic Engagement, Global Perspectives, Research Exploration, and Entrepreneurship, sponsor seminars, workshops, special trips, and community building events. Students can earn a combination Bachelor/Master Degree in five years in over 20 areas. The Early Assurance Programs allows qualified undergraduates to receive formal acceptance into the University of Buffalo Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy schools. Engineering students have the opportunity to study abroad in Germany, Hungary, Turkey, Singapore, and the UK. Anthropology students can gain experience in the Anthropology Research Museum. The Department of Media Study is establishing semester-long internships in Los Angeles and New York City. The Center for Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities facilitates undergraduate research in all departments across campus and maintains an extensive listing of available opportunities.</p>

<p>Endicott College in Massachusetts was the first US college to require internships in every program of study. Students complete three internships before graduation. The Keys to Degrees Program provides mentoring support and on-campus housing to single parents with one child. Students can complete master degrees in five years in Education, Interior Design, Nursing, and Business. There is also a three year accelerated Bachelors program for a variety of majors. Students in the School of Hospitality Management gain hands on experience at the campus La Chanterelle restaurant and participate in Hospitality Study Abroad programs in Ireland, Switzerland, UK, Australia, and Italy. Communication students run the campus TV station ECTV. Senior nursing students have the opportunity to complete a senior thesis using evidence-based research. Students can cross-register with members of the Northeast Consortium of Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts.</p>

<p>Archaeology students at Mississippi State University may participate in field schools and laboratory treatment of artifacts at the Cobb Institute of Archaeology. The Stennis Institute of Government and Community Development employs students as well as offering students experience in public service. Rising sophomores are eligible for summer research experiences in Computational Biology. The College of Business offers a major in PGA Golf Management. Students support research in and program evaluation and testing at the High Voltage Laboratory. The Flight Research Laboratory has students working on both faculty and their own projects. Engineering students participate in the Congressional Fellowship program and are encouraged to study abroad through a variety of exchange programs. The College of Engineering also has an Entrepreneurship Program that combines, coursework, seminars, and company experiences.</p>

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program funds research assistantships, stipends, and expenses for undergraduates. The Bioscience Undergraduate Research Skills and Training program pays students to work on projects while participating in professional development seminars and activities. The Herbst Program provides engineering students with classes in applied humanities. Puksta scholars receive an annual scholarship while completing a year-long civic project. The Public Interest Internship Experience Program pays students to work in governmental and non-profit agencies. Engineering students can participate in Engineering for Developing Communities. There are opportunities for undergraduate research and internships in the University’s many research center including BioFrontiers Institute, Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, Liquid Crystal Materials Research Center, Institute of Cognitive Science, the CU Heritage Center, and Renewable & Sustainable Energy Institute. The University has eleven residential academic programs including health professions, leadership, social entrepreneurship, and the arts.</p>

<p>Students at St.Olaf College in Minnesota can participate in four Conversations based on an integrated sequence of five courses. The Great Conversation is based on the great books and works of art. The topics for the other three conversations are American, Asian, and Science. The Collaborative Undergraduate Research and Inquiry program promotes undergraduate research including a Summer Undergraduate Program. Students can participate in the Center for Geophysical Studies of Ice and Climate which has projects from Sweden to Antarctica. The Positron Research Group provides summer research opportunities. Student Naturalists work with the Curator of Natural Lands to work with the Natural Lands Program. Students conduct agricultural research working with farmers on St. Olaf farmland. St. Olaf offers study abroad programs including Environmental Science in Australia, an Asia Term, Term in the Middle East, Global Semester, Biology in South India, and a Term in China.</p>

<p>Temple University in Pennsylvania offers accelerated Bachelor/Master degree programs in Engineering. Students majoring in science can participate in the Trans-Atlantic Science Student Exchange Program which includes Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, and Switzerland. The College of Science and Technology Undergraduate Research Program places students with faculty sponsors to perform lab research. Students in the School of Media and Communication can spend a semester in London, Dublin, Los Angeles, or New York City. Temple has a Rome campus with academic program tracks in Architecture/Landscape Architecture, International Business, Liberal Arts and Italian Studies, and the Visual Arts. The Creative Arts, Research, and Scholarship Program awards project and travel grants for student research. Students in the Diamond Research Scholars Program develop their own project during the summer and complete it during the fall semester. The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Research Scholars program partners students with faculty members to conduct research.</p>

<p>All students at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) complete either a Major Qualifying Project in their major or and Interactive Qualifying Project relating science and technology to society or human needs. Many students complete these projects through 30 Project Centers across the globe. Students can also complete their Major Qualifying Project at one of more than 20 research laboratories including the Heat and Mass Transfer Lab, the Photonics Laboratory, and Atomic Force Microscopy Lab. Students gain hands-on experience in the Metal Processing Institute, the Center for Advanced Integrated Radio Navigation, and the Fuel Cell Center. Student can apply for Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships to complete research under faculty supervision. First year students complete a two-course Great Problems Seminars that introduces students to university-level research and project work. Students can cross-register with members of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium.</p>

<p>The University of Dayton in Ohio offers 5-year Bachelor and Master Degree programs in a variety of fields including Biology, Computer Science, and Engineering. The Fitz Center sponsors Dayton Civic Scholars , a three-year program designed for student leadership in community service. Students can also participate in a Semester of Service where students work full-time at a social service agency while still living in student housing. River Stewards participate in a three-year interdisciplinary program that includes mini-courses, community service, and a senior project. Engineering students can participate in ETHOS-Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities of Service-Learning which exposes students to non-traditional technologies in service learning internships. The Innovation Center provides project-based learning for first, third, and fourth year engineering students. Students can work on faculty-mentored projects at the Tissue Regeneration & Engineering at Dayton Center. The Hanley Trading Center prepares students for entry into the capital trading industry. The Crotty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership provides students with internships and hands on experience with business consulting.</p>

<p>Students at the University of Rhode Island can apply for undergraduate fellowships at the Coastal Institute to work on projects on coastal management. The Center for Nonviolence & Peace Studies sponsors an alternative Spring Break in Nepal for nonviolence training. The Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America provides students with opportunities for research experience and internships as well as sponsors a minor in Hunger Studies. Engineering students can major in International Engineering where students earn two degrees: a BS in Engineering and a BA in German, French, Spanish, or Chinese. The five-year program includes a year spent abroad interning with an engineering firm. The College of Engineering offers several Accelerated 5-Year BS/MS programs including Ocean Engineering. Undergraduates also have the opportunity to participate in research at the URI Transportation Center. The Pacific-Basin Capital Markets Research Center provides scholarships for undergraduate finance students.</p>

<p>Business students at Texas A&M University can participate in the Aggies on Wall Street program during which they will spend two-weeks on Wall Street. The Mays Banking Program provides mentoring by a banker as well as access to paid summer banking internships. The Business Fellows Program includes a retreat, team projects including a case study, community service, and a New York trip. Students in the Trading, Risk & Investments Program complete three paid floor internships with three different board member companies. Freshman engineering students can take advantage of Foundation Clusters for Engineers to complete basic prerequisites. The College of Engineering also offers a five-year BS/MS program. Students can get hands-on experiences working at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. Undergraduates can work on field and laboratory projects at the Center for the Study of the First Americans. The Center for Humanities Research sponsors Undergraduate Apprenticeships. The College of Science has a variety of undergraduate research opportunities including the Undergraduate Program in Biological and Mathematical Science and USDA Undergraduate Research Opportunities.</p>

<p>At Ithaca College in New York, students in the College of Business can get hands on experience in the Center for Trading and Analysis of Financial Instruments. The College of Business sponsors the Business Idea Competition which is open to all Ithaca students. The Business-Link Professions program includes job shadowing along with professional explorations. The Center for Global Communications Innovation offers a three-day mini-course on Media for Social Responsibility which is open to all students. It also sponsors a summer program for communication students in Korea. The Park Center for Independent Media sponsors summer internships aimed at giving justice-oriented students the opportunity to work at independent/progressive media institutions and advocacy nonprofits. Students interest in community service and citizenship can apply to be a Park Scholar and receive scholarships for the entire cost of attendance. The Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship Program is awarded to STEM majors interested in pursuing a teaching career. Students interested in Gerontology can get hands on experience at the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute. The Ithaca London Center is one of the longest-standing study abroad programs in London.</p>

<p>The University of Maine’s Foster Center for Student Innovation provides office space for students to run their own business and counseling. Students can work as research assistants in the Advanced Structures & Composites Center. The Forest Bioproducts Research Institute sponsors Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships. Students can work on senior capstone projects or on faculty research projects in the Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology. The Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center sponsors the Maine State Government Summer Internship Program. Students interested in Wildlife Ecology can get hands-on experience in the Maine Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. Students in the School of Marine Sciences can participate in the Semester at Sea program sponsored by the Darling Marine Center. The Hudson Museum offers students internships and docent opportunities.</p>

<p>The Byrne-Aresty Program at Rutgers University in New Jersey offers students the opportunity to take a seminar that takes students from the classroom into labs, archives, and the field. The Aresty Research Center provides research assistantships to undergraduates as well as a summer science program and a scholars program. The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development offers students real-world experience. Students in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences can participate in the Student to Professional Internship Network. Undergraduates can intern at the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation. Engineering students can gain experience in research projects at the Ceramic, Composite and Optical Materials Center. The Voorhees Center for Civic Engagement hosts a fellowship program for undergraduates to work with community organization on group projects. The Center for Digital Filmmaking offer certificate programs available to any Rutgers student, regardless of major. Students in the School of Arts and Sciences can take Signature Courses that are designed and taught by award-winning teachers.</p>

<p>Students at Otterbein University in Ohio can participate in community-based research programs through undergraduate research teams that work with faculty. The Pack Fellowship offers students the opportunity to design their own community based project with a faculty sponsor and financial support. The Serve-the-City Practicum allows students to tie their coursework to an individualized service-learning project. The M3C fellowship program provides a financial award for students who commit to community service. Otterbein has recently dedicated the Knowlton Center for Equine Science which includes, stables, pastures, education, community outreach, and best use practices. Students can major in equine preveterinary medicine, equine business management, or equine veterinary technology. The OtterFit Program allows Health Promotion and Fitness majors to serve as personal trainers. Students can cross-registration with other schools of the Higher Education Council of Columbus, participate in the Philadelphia Center, or take part of the Washington Semester Plan.</p>

<p>The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is part of the National Student Exchange Program. It offers a variety of honors programs including the Chancellor’s Honor Program and the Haslam Scholars program. Students also can choose to participate in one of the Living and Learning Communities which includes a Design Community and one for students in the college of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Students in the College of Architecture and Design can study abroad in Poland, Germany, Finland, and Denmark. The Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation sponsors undergraduate competitions and has a start-up fund for students interested in creating their own businesses. Engineering students can intern at the Reliability & Maintainability Center. Engineering students can apply for a fellowship to help pay for study abroad. Students can intern and volunteer at the Forensic Anthropology Center.</p>

<p>The University of Texas at Dallas offers engineering students the chance to work on real-world projects through UTDesigns. The School of Management has established reciprocal exchanges including tuition in Australia, China, France, Germany, Israel, Poland, South Korea, Spain, and Turkey. It also has several fast track program for a combined Bachelors and Masters Degree. The Center for the Study of Texas Politics sponsors a leadership seminar and provides opportunities to interact with leaders. Pre-med and pre-dental students can apply for the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program which is a free six-week academic enrichment program to prepare for medical and dental school. Green Fellows provides a semester-long, fully paid undergraduate research fellowship in the biological sciences. Incoming freshman can begin research projects the summer before their freshman year through the Clark Research Program. The University is one of the few in the nation that offers scholarships to chess players and has won the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship seven times since 2003.</p>

<p>The University of Mary Washington in Virginia offers URES 197 which is a course where a student conducts individual or group research as a part of a faculty member’s research project. The Center for Historic Preservation provides students with opportunities for hands-on experiences through research and service projects. Students can work on public opinion research at the Center for Leadership and Media Studies. The College of Business offers students the ability to interact with well-known leaders in the corporate world as part of the Executive-in-Residence Program. Bowley scholars receive a scholarship and work at the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library.</p>

<p>The University of Massachusetts-Amherst participates in the National Students Exchange Program and the University of Massachusetts Student Exchange. Through the Civic Engagement & Service-Learning Department, students can join the Citizen Scholars Program, complete a Certificate in Civic Engagement and Public Service, or develop leadership through Community Liaisons. Students can take 2, 4, or 6 week summer intensives that provide laboratory or studio experience. The College of Natural Sciences offers a First-Year Research Experience and Integrated Concentration in Science that is embedded with your major and provides students with the opportunity to work with real world problems. Students can gain training and experience in the Center for Heritage and Society. Anthropology students can participate in fields schools including Archaeological Heritage and Bioarchaelogy and Forensic Anthropology.</p>

<p>The University of Arkansas offers Freshman Business Learning Teams that share classes, living accommodations, and co-curricular activities. Business majors can also participate in Leadership Walton that consists of a four-year program of leadership and career development activities. The Center for Retailing Excellence provides students with a two-year in-depth mentoring opportunity. The college also sponsors a summer study abroad program in China. Engineering students can participate in the summer Global India program which provides credit for their degrees. The GREEN Research Center for Nanoplasmonic Solar Cells provides undergraduates students with the opportunity to work with faculty. Undergraduate students also participate on teams part of the Center for Innovation in Healthcare Logistics.</p>

<p>Students at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota attend the annual Nobel Conference hosted by the school. Students often have the opportunity to participate in seminars taught by conference presenters. Artists brought to campus through the Gustavus Artist Series often teach master classes for the students. Global Insights provides a year-long program of presentation, lectures, and discussions focusing on a featured region. Students can gain hands-on experience at the Linnaeus Arboretum including working on research projects. Students can complete their general education requirements through Curriculum II which focuses on the development of the Western Tradition and comparisons to non-Western Cultures.</p>

<p>The University of Oregon‘s Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program allows juniors and seniors to work as members of a research team and be granted a tuition waiver. The Materials Science Institute offers several summer research programs for undergraduates. Undergraduates can also work on research projects in the Freyd Dynamics Lab. All students can join the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center Business Club that provides undergraduate students with first-hand experience with numerous aspects of the sports business. Marine Biology students take their upper-division courses at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. Physics majors can participate in research through the department’s Undergraduate Research Groups. Challenge First Year Interest Groups are introductory classes but smaller in size for more faculty interaction.</p>
