I'm looking for a boarding school for my little sister.

here are some of the things we are looking for [i know... some of the things listed may seem old-fashioned.. but w/e. I absolutely loved reading Mallory Towers LOL]

must be single sex [female]

uniforms would be really nice

highly ranked

in a good location

good opportunities for service/ ecs

my sister is very smart, but she isn't the most confident person around. i also want there to be a strong teacher/advisor/student connection because i can somehow forsee her slacking off in the future.

so if you have any idea of boarding schools that fit the description, or any feedback at all, GREAT, Post'em here!

thanks diggindeerfield! great link! i like emma willard as well… i know a lady whose daughter goes there, and she loves it!

to cc’ers in general: anyone here go to any of these schools/have kids who go there? it would be really helpful if i could hear your thoughts =D

Westover gets my vote (I am biased, my D will be going there this fall).

They have a very strong teacher-student connection through a system called Conference. Their community is small and intimate, and very supportive. You should definitely check it out. They are located in Middlebury, CT - not far from Miss Porters, so you can easily see both schools in one day.

Dana Hall is close to me, and I’ve worked with several students from DH. They don’t have uniforms, but they are in a nice area (Wellesley, MA), close to Boston. It’s very well regarded, known for academic rigor. It’s primarily a day school, I believe, but they do have boarders. The girls I knew got attractive FA packages to come board there. I think they have good academics and athletics and meet a lot of the criteria you spell out here.

Your welcome! And Personally I think you should check out Emma Willard and Miss Porters, I think they are both beautiful, and Emma Willard’s buildings are stunnung! Also, boarding school review, the link i added, can be outdated so don’t weigh to much on it!

I am putting in a vote for Miss Porter’s. My D1 graduated from MPS last year. There are some outstanding teachers (my daughter did an independent study one year at her teacher’s suggestion when he noticed her interest in a certain subject). The area is very nice. They have a lot of opportunities for social/community service - including trips to other countries (one of D1’s classmates was on Oprah for her volunteer activities). I will say when my daughter entered MPS she NEVER spoke up in class - by the time she graduated she had become a very confident and outspoken young lady. The transformation was remarkable and I credit MPS for much of her personal growth.

Their “brother” school is Avon Old Farms and students get involved in the theater at both campuses. They have a few “merit” scholarships available. Both the staff in admissions and college counseling are fabulous. The advisors have a group of @ 5 students (mixed grades) and they get together regularly. Oftentimes these groups will go out to dinner or to a teachers house for a meal. Please ask me any questions if I can be of assistance. I would highly recommend taking a look. Good luck to your sister.

I hear a lot about Miss Porter’s, probably because my classmate’s grandmother went there. My classmate said that she HEARD that they might change it to a co-ed school, but that’s just something I heard. I don’t know. Haha.

Wow, can’t believe no one has mentioned The Ethel Walker School! My daughter graduated from there a few years ago and my friend’s daughter is graduating this year. First of all, the campus is beautiful. Some of the girls are riders so they have a spectacular set of fields as well as a very successful athletic program. My daughter was very involved in their first rate arts program and she danced as well. What caught me about your post was your mention of her confidence. My daughter, coming from public school, really didn’t have a lot of self-confidence and Walker’s used to have a campaign called “Emerge.” She sure did emerge. The advisor/student connection lasts during their entire time at the school and her advisor knew her inside/out and suggested so many new things for her to try - based on her understanding of what my daughter wanted and was intrigued by. They have all the requirements you listed below. They also call Avon Old Farms their “brother” school but do a lot with other boys’ schools in this part of Connecticut - the girls, if they choose, have very active social lives but the school really focuses on how girls learn and what girls need. They are very focused on ‘service learning’ and each girl has a requirement for community service to fill (# of hours). Next to the campus, they conserved 300 acres of the school’s land so there are miles and miles of trails, and the campus sits on top of a kind of plateau with an amazing view. They have academic through honors and AP classes. I can’t say enough about how much my daughter loved Walker’s and encourage you to check it out! PS - My daughter was a day student, we live in Simsbury, which is a wonderful suburban area but is very close to great shopping and halfway between Boston and NY. My daughter’s best friends were some of the boarding students!

Dana Hall, Lindin Hall and Foxcroft have nice girls. My sister looked at all the girl BS on East coast. Revisit days are very important in order to sense any clicky gossip groups.
