Just finished up my Junior year this week, and I've been browsing on the forums for a while now. I'm new to all of this college finding and such, being brought up in North Carolina, and a diehard UNC fan it's all I've known. My brother is going to UNC, and I had my mind set on it as well. I'm looking to maybe branch out a little bit now, I'm very interested in Astrophysics and Astronomy, Chemistry, typically all sciences and math. I'm fairly set on going into dentistry, and if all works out perfectly, orthodontics. I'm in a complicated situation because of a new school being built this next year, I will be moving from a school with around 350 in senior class to one with close to 100. Now for stats...
SAT: 2140/2400, 1460/1600 (740 Math, 720 CR, 670 WR) (Pondering whether to retake in the fall before applying?)
Rank: 1/350, will be 1/100 next year
GPA: UW 4.0 Weighted 4.8
AP's: Chemistry, Calculus AB, Statistics (Hopefully 5, 5, 4/5)
Planning on taking Calculus BC, Biology, and self studying Physics and US History next year. (Small school which doesn't offer many AP's)
EC's
- SGA president sophomore year, VP Junior year, Going to be Student Body president next year.
- Swim team Captain all 3 years so far
- 17th in the state meet last year
- Helped work with Special Olympics swim team last 2 years for close to an hour every week.
- Help coach on and off, will be doing swim clinics this summer for about 2 hours each week for little kids.
- Various volunteering, outside of swimming I don't have much concentrated volunteering work. I'm going to hopefully volunteer at a local hospital this summer though.
- NHS
- Interact
- French Club
- Junior Marshall
- Participated in Model United Nations this year
I realize now I should have joined more of the things I'm interested in in regards to math and science. But there isn't exactly math or science clubs at my school to join. I just need to get a rough list of schools to visit this summer. Right now it's basically UNC, Wake Forest, UVA? I don't know which reaches I should go for, which will be reaches or all of that. I don't want to go across country so pretty much limited to the east. Northwestern is probably about as west as I go.
Any recommended colleges are welcomed. Thank you!

Just realized I left off what I'm looking for in terms of atmosphere.
It doesn't have to be a huge party scene, but I love to be involved with sports of any kind. Not extremely nerdy, but not all out partying. I've visited UNC several times, and had a tour. I don't know if it was cause I was making myself or not, but I fell in love.

Why didn't you take BC Calc this year?
Taking AB Calc this year and BC next year seems like a waste of time, since BC only has couple chapters that AB doesn't cover....unless you just want to get and easy A..

Our school only had a year long Calculus AB, or I would have loved to. So next year I have to take Calculus BC online because our school doesn't even offer it...

Take a look at University of Arizona in Tucson. Fantastic astronomy program...they are working with NASA on the Mars Rover program. It would give you a change of environment and out of state costs are not overwhelming. They take a holistic approach to reviewing applicants...not set GPA, SAT scores etc. I think you might be a good candidate.

Although it is slightly outside of your geographic range, you should consider Rice in Houston. Very good school with strong science programs (incl. pre med) and associations with NASA.
