I am trying to find a good music composition/production college for my 23 year old son to transfer into. He has a background in hip-hop/rap music composition and production, and was classically trained as a child (he still plays piano all the time, but needs to brush up on his formal skills). He is interested in scoring films, and writes music all the time. He is looking for a small liberal arts college if possible. Any ideas/suggestions/comments are welcomed and appreciated!

Great program-good job assistance/contacts for grads: UC Irvine

You might want to repost your question in the Music Major forum. You might find a wealth of suggestions there. Are you/he looking for an undergrad or graduate level program? Berklee comes to mind immediately.

Hey steiny,

SUNY University at Buffalo sounds like it might be a good match for your son. We have a fantastic composition and theory program, and the program is currently expanding so we're offering scholarships and the like. If it's film music he's into we just had Philip Glass here last semester to talk about film scoring. The school is open to all sorts of styles and mixes, students can focus basically on anything they want as long as it's creatively done. We have loads of different types of ensembles and tons of concerts.

Summers in Buffalo are great too, I've posted most of the summer concerts on our myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/buffalomusic/ . The school's website is http://www.music.buffalo.edu and the school affiliated concerts are listed at http://slee.buffalo.edu . The website's not that informative, it's being redone, so if you have questions just post them here or send to sbailey4 at buffalo.edu. I'm a theory PhD student there so I can give you great advice/info.

You should look at SUNY Purchase, I know someone in their music production program.
