Hello everyone! I am a rising senior and I'm doing my college researching. I am really interested in the Video Game Industry and plan on majoring in something that would bring me into a good video game company, but I am not sure what exactly I should major. Options include finance/management (producer), computer science (programmer) and animation/art (3d designer), but I am open to options.

I have done a little research on my own and I've mostly found either the really good reach schools (like MIT and CMU) or the safeties (NYU poly), but no target schools (schools with a pretty good chance of getting into). I think my stats are rather decent so I'm aiming pretty high. I scored a 2330 on the SAT and 2 high 700s on SAT2. I have an overall 94.7 average on my transcript, and have attended courses such as honors trig, honors precalc, honors chem, honors physics, AP world history, AP US history, AP Computer Science; in my senior year i will take AP physics B, AP macro/micro economy and AP Calc BC. I am the founder of 1 club, one of many editors for the school publication, and the Webmaster/Director of Animation on the School Robotics Team (competition under the FIRST robotics competition.)

So please recommend me decent colleges that fits my stats and interests. Thank you for your help! :)

bump.
someone please help me out

If you are good at math and computer programming, do a normal computer science major including the usual courses in algorithms and complexity, operating systems, software engineering, computer networks, databases, and security (all of which are important in games, but also in many other computer software jobs), but add computer science electives in graphics and user interfaces, and other electives in art and animation.

If you look at computer game companies’ web sites and look under their jobs and careers, you’ll find a lot of jobs for those with a computer science background (but very few for those with “game design” degrees). Also, a general computer science background will allow you to go to other computer software jobs, in case the computer game jobs are not available or not what you want.

What state do you live in? Some state universities are very good in computer science (California, Washington, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, etc.).

^ Good advice. In a way, game design major is one of those boys’ fantasies – football, baseball, basketball players – but not many have the know-hows to make it happened. On another hand, my neighbor lives in such a fantasy world. He has a PhD in the plain old computer science.

for someone with your interests, applying to USC should be a no-brainer.

RPI … WPI, Northeastern, Drexel all have game design programs. NYU (not Poly) has its Game Center that offers courses and brings together others from around the university.
