My daughter will be a Junior in High School and she plays the flute. We are looking for a University with a good Music School that also has a good jazz program. We live in Indiana and recently visited Indiana University. They have a good jazz program, but they are not ready for jazz flute players. Does anyone know of some reputable Universities that would be open to a flute player interested in Classical and Jazz studies?

If your daughter want to play jazz flute for fun then she can find a place at a small/private school. Or she can start her own band featuring jazz flute. If she is at a university with music majors then she will be in competition for a playing spot with them in all the jazz ensembles and bands. She will be disappointed that at universities with music majors she will be shut out to provide playing spots for declared music/ performance majors.

CURTIS INSTITUTE.

That is THE place to go for jazz studies.

I’ve never heard of any jazz program at Curtis, and a spot check of their web site before posting this showed no mention of jazz whatsoever. Am I missing something?

The University of Central Oklahoma and the University of North Texas have one of the best Jazz programs in the country. Also seriously consider Tulane in New Orleans! The UCO Jazz Lab in Edmond, a suburb of North OKC, is a really awesome cultural asset.

[The University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab](http://www.ucojazzlab.com/)

UCO is also partnering with the Academy of Contemporary Music in London to put a “School of Rock” in the Bricktown district of OKC. It will open this fall I believe, but the Jazz Lab has been an OKC hotspot for years. UCO has some really good music programs.

UNT has an annual Jazz festival that they hold in Addison, TX each year. Addison is one of the closer-in suburbs, whereas UNT is located in Denton, which is one of the further-out suburbs of Dallas. The festival is regarded as one of the best Jazz festivals in the country.

oops double post…but this one is better-written:

OP, does your daughter want to major in the flute playing, or merely keep it up as an extra-curricular?

UNT is definitely worth a look.

Plenty more available by searching.

B Man 22’s offering was not based on fact. It is not worth investigating further. The Curtis program is exceptionally competitive, and is rooted in the tradition of western classical music.

You could try the jazz program at McGill University in Montreal. I’m pretty sure they have a course of study for jazz flute.

I’m doing a similar search for my daughter… she’s in a Jazz Combo group at her high school and she’s lving it… Now comes the college search… Let me know if you found anything and I’ll let you know if I come across anything.

walentschik, welcome. In the event you missed it, the last post in this thread is about a year old, and it is unlikely the originating poster will be back, as their post count is “1”.

You would be better served by either starting a new thread or posting to the far more active thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/154774-best-university-jazz-programs.html?highlight=jazz. Detailing some of your daughter’s musical background and training, instrument and some idea of her academic stats will be useful in helping others suggest some potential programs.

Lida Baker, David Baker’s wife, is a flutist. She also teaches at the Aebersold summer camps.
