and universities in other countries outside of the U.S. for American student. Does anyone know of a book or website where I can find out? I have google searched American Universities and have found listings of several: one in Rome, one in Paris, Greece, Bulgaria. I am also interested in learning more about other colleges in Europe, Central America, South America.

I'm interested in the very same thing - but everyone I've talked to has recommended going the study abroad route, rather than directly enrolling in a foreign institution.

You probably want to keep in mind that the notion of college is more or less absent in many European systems. In many European countries (such as Germany and the Scandinavian nations) you go directly from HS to the American equivealent of Grad School, i.e. Med School, Law School, etc. The reason why the European systems discourage academic soul-searching is that they are generally publicly funded and it makes little sense to keep people in higher education for any longer than necessary. Also, non-residential colleges/universities is more or less the norm. Furthermore, the word "college" itself is shunned in many European systems and people often associate it with high school. in many of these countries the government decides what institutions are of high enough quality to called "universities". These institutions have a strong research focus and turn out Ph.Ds. Institutions with a more practical/professional focus like to call themselves "university colleges". Also, bigger is often thought of as better. Thus, small university colleges enjoy very little prestige whereas the huge universities tend to be prestigeous.

There is no European system though and there are a ton of exceptions. For example, there are a bunch of tiny elite institutions France, the UK is completely different, etc. etc. If you still think you want to go down the Europe route it would probably be a good idea to identify a country or a set of countries, which would allow you to read up on their specific systems.

I am European and I go to a small Liberal Arts College in the U.S. ... I am more or less unemployable back home, lol.
