Looking for match/safety schools.

Hello everyone.

I'm about to finish preparing my list of colleges and universities I'm going to apply to.

My SAT's: 1950 (CR 590 M 700 W 640) - I'm taking SAT's for the last time on 2nd November and I hope to increase that score to at least 2000.

My extracurricular activities:

6 years in a soccer team.

5 years in a basketball team.

representative of a school in the MUN (Model United Nations)

Finished 4-year Music School.

Some volunteering (not much because I am really involved in sports and music).

I am a dual USA citizen so I'm going to take TOEFL exam in the near future. I'm expecting to get around 100/120 pts overalls.

My list of schools so far:

Penn State University Park

NYU

Fordham

Syracuse

Boston University

Northeastern University

Rutgers University

University of Delaware

American University

George Washington University

University of Miami

UCLA

probably one more school from west coast

I'm interested in majoring something related with business. Do I have a solid chance of getting into most of those schools? Please, give me some suggestions on what other schools should I consider. I would like to study either on East or West Coast. Thank you in advance.

Everything looks really good and you’re in good shape for most of those colleges.

Since you’re looking to major in business, I’d look at Bentley University too because it’s a very good business school. It’s about 20 minutes away from Northeastern and BU.

Any other comments, please? What other schools on the East and West Coast should I consider? Do I really have a good chance of getting into those schools? - which are matches, safeties or reaches?

Look for 2100s to comfortably (but not safety comfortable) get into BU, NYU, NEU, GWU. Those are low reaches at the moment, can be reaches if you up those SAT scores. How’re those subject tests? GPA? Rank?

UCLA is a reach.

UMass amherst or Uconn are damn good state schools in the northeast with good programs worth looking into. You’d match those at the moment. Good luck!

Do I really need at least 2100 on SAT’s to have any chance of being admitted into those schools? Ok then, I figured that I won’t apply to Georgetown and American since they don’t have so great business schools (according to many rankings online). What other East or West Coast schools should I take into account considering the fact that my family income is below 30k$ a year (so I’m looking for schools that would give me a good financial aid package). Should I even bother applying to any of UC’s schools?

GPA? You left out the most important thing.

As I said earlier I am dual citizen so I apply as US citizen but my transcripts are sent from my inernational school. We have 3 years of HS and we don’t have GPA. Our system gives us average of all subjects that we take every year (usually 9-11 subjects) and each grade has the same weight. In my first year I had an average of 3.8/6.0 and in second grade it was 4.0/6.0 (no one actually gets average of 6.00. Usually in HS 5.0 is considered excellent average. Moreover I attend school which is on 20th place in the whole country so it’s really competetive). Hope this explanation helps.

If you need financial aid, forget all schools that are public universities out of the state in which your parents pay taxes. You can however maximize scholarships by applying to private schools (especially LACs) 500+ miles from home.
NYU, Fordham, UCLA and the out of state publics should be removed from your list.
(UCLA costs twice as much as your family makes in a year…)
If you want to stay on the East Coast, look for schools in the South, you’ll find more affordable options there (including among some public universities that offer merit, although with your current stats not likely enough to be affordable considering your income).
Look at the Mid Atlantic and Pacific Northwest schools that meet 100% need.
Run the Net Price Calculators at all the schools you’re considering before adding them to your list.
Have you asked your guidance counselor for your fee waivers yet? Applying is expensive and with your income level you’d qualify.
