Hi all! You would think that after 3 kids this would get easier, but alas, here we are. We’re still searching for that “just right” school. Rising senior is looking for anything in above subset of fields. Would rather not stay in WI(I know Beloit is an option). Would love to get the cost between $20-25 per year. GPA is meh(3.6 Unweighted. Weighted 3.65. Weighting scale is wonky, AP’s only give you a boost of .15, so highest GPA possible is 4.15) 3 AP’s so far, 2 5’s and a 3. Taking 4 more this year and a college course as well. Our school doesn’t allow for dual enrollment unless you’ve taken all your required credits, so it’s not a possibility until senior year. Some leadership, job, lots of volunteer hours. He’s really not picky, so where should we look?
Wants to leave WI, but to where?
Do net price calculators at other schools give results in you price limit?
College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics is your friend.
He can run a search by size, out-of-state cost, and major, and see what pops up. For archaeology and your price range without merit, as a WI resident, UW LaCrosse comes up. So go check that one out.
Yes. We have a few. App State, University of Cincinnati, Colorado State, University of New Mexico, Michigan State. Looking for other options, maybe not as large.
Truman State. Marshall. Southern Miss. will be 3 potentially at price. Check the NPCs.
Thanks. I’ll take a look at their programs
Maybe South Dakota, South Dakota State, Idaho, Western Carolina, North Dakota, North Dakota State…those could all be in that financial range I think.
You might look at Western Carolina. They have a special NC Promise lowered tuition. Will be cheaper than App State.
If he doesn’t mind a small school Roanoke College might work.
One possibility is U. of Louisiana - Lafayette. Your son would qualify for the Magnolia Scholarship which would include an OOS tuition waiver, $1200/semester toward the remaining tuition, and almost $2600/semester toward housing for the first two years. They have some interesting archaeology work going on as well that is looking for original Acadian settlements. And there are about 14k undergrads here, so not nearly as big as some of the others on your list. Will continue to think…
(The hyperlink with Lafayette goes to the wrong college and happens automatically…the other two links were added by me and go to relevant locations.)
One thing I would ask your son to think about is what kind of archaeology/history he is interested in. At most schools, after the introductory courses - the regions covered do narrow, as do the possible advisors and the areas the advisor might have specific content knowledge in. And I know that some archaeology programs really do focus on specific regions or time periods.
It would be a bummer (for example) to go to a school that primarily concentrates on Meso American archaeology if what you are interested in is Ancient Far East archaeology. Not to say you wouldn’t get a great education but you might not find the contacts and mentorship in the areas you are truly interested in.
Take a look at UNC Charlotte. A very good program getting even better and close to your price range.
Schools not yet mentioned that you might want to consider include :
-
Bridgewater State (MA). There is a scholarship for OOS students that will likely bring the cost down to at least $25k and it’s only a 40m train trip to Boston, which could be a fun option for occasional weekends. Its anthropology program also tends to have smaller classes with 15-20 students with a cap at 35 students. There are about 8300 undergrads here.
-
Central Michigan: This residential campus doesn’t have separate fees for OOS students, so it’s about $24k before any scholarships come into play, which I suspect your son would receive. There’s about 11k undergrads here.
-
Northern Illinois: This residential campus doesn’t have OOS fees either and is within budget at around $23k before any scholarships, which I think are likely. There are about 12k undergrads here.
-
U. of Northern Iowa: This residential campus has about 8k undergrads. Sticker price is close to $30k for OOS students, but all OOS students appear eligible for at least $5k in scholarships , and your son would be likely to receive more.
-
U. of South Florida: Sticker is right around $30k, but it appears as though your son would be eligible for $5k in merit money. This is a big school with nearly 38k undergrads.
-
Western Michigan: Sticker is about $28k, but it appears your son would be eligible for $3500/year in merit money. I’ve heard lovely things about the town of Kalamazoo, and there are about 15k undergrads here.
These are great suggestions. Thanks everyone!
Grand Valley State in Allendale, MI would give you instate tuition and plus $3500 off. It would get you close to 21k. It’s in a rural area, but easy to get to downtown Grand Rapids, as Grand Valley has a bus that takes you from Allendale campus to downtown Grand Rapids campus.
