UCBALUMNUS…right, but if you do two years at a community college first, you’d be able to save a LOT of money on undergrad tuition.

Wow–this is a “hot” thread. I haven’t read every detail of every post but I don’t think that anyone has yet suggested North Carolina State University for mechanical engineering–it is a very solid school where a lot of interesting research is being done but the school doesn’t have the national reputation it deserves. The admit rate is about 50% Another school that would fit the OP’s criteria is Purdue University, which does have a great reputation and about a 60% admit rate.

Purdue is well regarded internationally, too.

BeanTownGirl, I specifically listed the admit rate by gender so as not to mislead. The student wants a prestigious school with slightly easier admissions than the tippy top. OP really hasn’t asked much about school environment but most engineering schools will be heavily male.

2college - I’m sorry, I didn’t write my post more clearly. I wasn’t implying you were trying to mislead the OP. I just wanted OP to be aware that the admit rate for females and the matriculate rate for females are very different at schools like RPI, WPI, etc. Just in case they may not be aware. For some kids a deal-breaker, but not for mine who prefers the nerdier culture ;)

BeanTownGirl, thank you. You are absolutely right.
