So I have a double in Bursley. Recently I was offered a single in Markley for it. However, singles are $1600 more per year, and my parents aren't willing to chip in any money at all for it. So if I was going to trade, I'd have to pay the extra $1600 (which I can afford considering I'm earning about $200 a week this summer). I'm wondering if you guys would pay $1600 more for a single in Markley?

Also, I'm wondering whether you guys think trading a single in Markley for a double on Central/Hill (Couzens, Markley, South/East/West Quad, Alice Lloyd) is easier then trying to trade a double in Bursley for a double on Central/Hill? And whether it'll be easy to trade a single in Markley for a double in Bursley (in case I decide not to stay in a single). Cause since it's still early in the summer, I could try trading my dbl in bursley for a single in markley, then trying to trade the single in markley for a dbl on central/hill, and if I don't find someone soon, then I could try to retrade it for a dbl in bursley. But that might be a bit risky if I don't find a trade...

Just stick with the double in Bursley. Why do you want to live in a single? Yeah it can get annoying with a roomate at times but IMO in freshman year its important to room with someone else. You will get to know a lot more people that way and also learn to live with someone else. If possible, get a single your sophomore year.

as far as i know, a lot of people try to get singles. singles are wanted for the most part, iono people like their own space. personally i would want a double.

anyway, you cant start swapping until aug 1. and both people need to be there to switch. so unless both of you live near UM, you can only do this during move in. so switching, then switching prolly wont be too easy. nevertheless, a single in markley is definitely in much more demand than a dbl in bursley.

im actually in a quad in oxford right now. im trying to switch to any of the other Hill dorms, even markley. so if you get that single in markley, and find you want roommates, keep in touch. maybe we can talk. good luck on your switch tho, taking buses everyday to north seems like a pain and a waste of time.

I'm from the other camp that says roommates are way over-rated. I would have killed for a single after just a few days with my awful u-assigned roommate. A VERY long first semester...

Anyway, to answer your question, if Central/Hill is your goal, I'd have to think that unloading a single would be easier than a North campus double in a dorm full of freshmen. You'd have a broader range of students interested in a single, freshmen and upperclassmen, so I'm guessing that type of trade would be easier. And, even if you aren't able to trade off the single, the only downside IMO is the added cost. Markley is a very social dorm where most kids keep their doors open...lots of interaction with kids on your floor. I doubt you'd feel isolated in a Markley single if that's a concern.

Or, you could let this particular trade go and keep at it. As you said, it's still early and something else might pop up.

Well I know for a fact that you can start swapping now, because I helped my brother get a swap from his dbl in Markley to a dbl in South Quad, so if I did switch, I could switch within this week, then I'd have a single to try to trade with...so yeah.

Anyways, I'm looking for some more opinions so any would be nice :)

Okay Kevin--
Look at it this way...From scrolling through the room swap listings, how many kids are looking to move OUT of Bursley v. move IN? That should tell you something. I'm guessing your trade options are very limited. If this was my kid who wanted to get off of North campus, I'd tell him to grab that single while it's still available.
