My homeschooled Junior in high school is trying to compile a good list of schools to apply to next fall. Her end-result goal is to be able to write, produce and animate her own cartoons/comics. She has looked at a few schools with animation and game design majors or minors, but would like to add more on the safety school side that are still not strictly art schools.
She is looking within an 8 hour radius of Youngstown, OH. Money is definitely a factor - our EFC will be around $7500 and she doesn’t want to take out unsubsidized loans if possible, unless it is for CMU. She has a strong art portfolio.
She loves Carnegie Mellon and if she were to get in she’d be set, I think, but with the low acceptance rates she won’t bet on getting in.
She liked Grove City but they only have game design and art as minors.
Her stats are
ACT 32 E 36, R 33, M 27, Sci 32, writing 10
PSAT probably commended (211 SI)
AP English Lang and Comp - will take in May
SAT 2 Math 1 this May
SAT 2 English this May
Next year she should be taking almost all DE classes, mostly in Art although she also may take a computer science course. We ran into a road block with that this year, as we didn’t realize she had to enroll in CCP by March and she lost a year’s worth of potential college courses. They wouldn’t let us just pay for the courses without state money either. Very frustrating.
Anyway…any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
