Looking for thoughts on dance programs

Most days are pretty full. I know Wednesdays are less busy which is nice because it gives her a breather mid-week. It’s a nice change from last year, when they were on a severely reduced schedule!!

Dickinson College has a partnership with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet that gives credit toward a liberal arts degree through professional ballet instruction. They also have a performance group on campus called DTG.

Hi! I see your son is at Montclair in the dance program. My granddaughter auditioned on Wednesday and received her acceptance today (Friday). We were amazed it came through so quickly! Montclair is one of 2 top colleges for her. The other is Marymount and she’s finishing up a video for them.

Montclair is a huge campus. That surprised us. How many dance classes does your son take per week? She is currently dancing about 20 hours (or more)per week between high school dance (she attends a school for the arts) and studio.

She liked the instructors who were leading the auditions. Are freshmen allowed to audition for production? How difficult is it to get to NYC? I know the train station is right there, but does it run on weekends, too?

I know my questions are all over the place, but I’m still shaky from the good news this morning.

Congratulations! My son is still waiting to hear from two programs (Pace and Boston Conservatory) before he makes a decision. I’ve read a lot of good things about Montclair throughout these threads so it sounds like your granddaughter has a great option!

My son is waiting on Pace too. Heard Pace decisions usually come out between first and second week of March. Anyone know if it’s true?

Not sure. The school says decisions will be out April 1, but I’ve seen where the head of the school personally calls those accepted ahead of time. What were your son’s thoughts or impressions? When did he audition? Mine auditioned in early February. He was really upbeat about process and had good experience. It’s definitely a top school for him. Is your son looking elsewhere? I thought it was a great location.

My son LOVED Pace! He came out all smiles and gushing about what nice kids he met. I was surprised, it hadn’t been his top choice up until then. But I think its a great fit for him, he’s definitely a commercial dancer vs concert, although he’s trained to do both. He auditioned on the 18th, was kept for an interview but said he got the feeling one of them on the panel didn’t like him (?) which was just his takeaway, I guess. My son is not a tapper but said he tried to get thru it and it felt ok. I guess they know most kids aren’t, that’s why they say they don’t hold it against them. Hope he gets in, he has an academic scholarship already, so that helps a little. Also applied to NYU. Not too confident in that one though.

My son got the call from Pace Commercial Dance yesterday - he’s in!!! Good luck to the rest of you waiting - let us know if your son or daughter got the call too!

Congrats to your son! Yes my son got call this week, was very happy. Hoping some talent $$ will put more in reach. Don’t know if they give? We will see. But he is super excited he got call.

Congratulations! Yes, my son got an academic scholarship and I’m really hoping for some sort of dance scholarship as well, the cost is crazy but it really is his top choice. We are still waiting on NYU (but I think they may not be as good of a fit for my son) so just hope Pace comes through with a little more aid. I wonder if our boys met? Please stay in touch!

Will do. My son auditioned Feb. 4. He is still waiting on BoCo but with the cost and apparent smaller scholarships that might be more of a reach. We will see :grinning:

Thanks. My granddaughter was completing her audition video for Marymount Manhattan even though she was leaning toward Montclair. Unfortunately, during a rehearsal for an upcoming performance, she was dropped during a lift and suffered a mild concussion. She’s ok now, but missed the deadline. She’s been accepted in the dance program at Towson and Goucher and is waiting to hear from Hofstra. She was going to audition at Slippery Rock, too, but she really liked Montclair’s program and the proximity to NYC. I think she’ll be committing this week!:heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

From what I’ve learned, I get the impression that there will be no talent award from Pace. He got a strong academic scholarship but it is still beyond reach. Very disheartening.

I was just thinking the same thing. How do you know they won’t offer money?
I know they offered talent scholarships during certain dance competitions. My son didn’t attend one of those events but a friend of his did - and she won 100k from them and she will most likely be going to Juilliard instead, so she wont be using the Pace money. Would be nice if they put that back into a pool and spread the wealth!

Indeed  I don’t know for sure but admissions told me they don’t see many talent awards this late and that we should talk to performing arts school. We have not done that yet. He has a couple of other “less expensive” but still great options and is waiting to hey from one more school but he was really excited about pace.

Yes, my son too. We are waiting on 2 more schools but he REALLY wants Pace!
Please keep me posted if your DS accepts Pace - maybe our boys can room together. Otherwise I think the school chooses for them and my son would really like another dance major for a roommate. Feels they would have so much more in common than one left to chance.
:slightly_smiling_face:

Congratulations on the Pace acceptance!!
Regarding artistic and academic merit –
Just FYI, at Pace it doesn’t really stack. I mean, yes it stacks, but it maxes out at 30k/year approx. So the 100k (or 25k/year) that someone might get from a dance competition is wonderful, but if they get 30k/year in academic scholarship, which is not uncommon at all, it doesn’t really “matter” for your bottom line because the max will be 30k/year. Of course, if you get 20k or 28k a year in academic merit, however, well then an artistic bonus is nice because it can push you up to that 30k max.
But I just didn’t want you kicking yourself for missing out on that 100k artistic piece. It might not have made any difference at all, or maybe just a minimal difference once you see how generous the academic awards are.

That’s great feedback and very helpful. Thank you.

Oh wow! Thank you so much for the info. Yes, my son was awarded 30K per year for honors college (academic scholarship) and we were hoping for more in a talent scholarship to offset cost. Pace is estimated 78k per year room & board - CRAZY! :astonished:

Yep so about 48k net. It’s definitely not cheap.
