Looking to get a degree in music...

(Didn’t know which topic to post this under…)
I am a junior in high school, about to be a senior, and I am thinking about going to a college for music. I play the violin, which I have taught myself, but I have only been playing for about a year. What are my chances of getting into music college straight out of high school? I hope to double major and go for stringed instruments and composition…

What level of skill are people expecting with auditions and such?

@borntobeewild I suggest posting this in the music majors forum.

Violin tends to be a very competitive instrument for admissions. Have you looked at the audition requirements for schools in which you are intetested?

Composition audition requirements in terms of skill level in an instrument seem to really vary.

Is there a way i can move posts to a different forum?

Also, I want to know what a stringed instruments major would entail? Would I be playing classical music all the time? If so, I’m probably better off not going to college at all

@borntobeewild you can ask the moderator to move the post to the music major forum.

As for your question, what are you looking to do with a degree in music? You may want to look at the web pages for some schools like IU Jacobs School of Music to see what it takes to get in and also what a degree program would look like.

A self taught violin only having played for 1 year isn’t a lot of experience so getting into a top music school might be difficult as these are competitive. My younger D who is only a Sophomore in HS and plays Cello is thinking of a music degree so we just started looking.

I’m sure there are less competitive schools with music programs so if you just check those schools music program web pages then you might be able to find out what is involved. Good luck in your search.
