I have my own apartment right now, and my parents are Florida residents. Would I be considered out-of-state if my parents were to leave Florida while I am a student at UF? Would I lose bright futures? Links if possible please.

I read on the Bright Futures web site that once you have the award, you still have to be a Florida resident for 12 consecutive months prior to each year that you are funded. That is you, the student, not your parents.

So as long as YOU the student are a resident for 12 consecutive months prior to each year of college, then you qualify. I think that means you have to keep a Florida address for the full year, so if you have an apartment, you need to keep it over the summers.

You can go visit your parents for the summer or go to study abroad or work up north for the summer, but you have to have the Florida address for 12 consecutive months prior to each year you are funded.

I can’t remember if you’re a current student. If you are, you’ll be fine. “Permanent residence is evaluated for the domicile year associated with the initial term of entry to UF or the term for which you are seeking reclassification.”

If you’re not, there’s a few rules that can come into play. The university is in charge of determining your residency status. If you provide 51% of your support, you can be classified as independent and then the university will evaluate your residency status.

My source: [UF Admissions](http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/residency/index.html)
and the pages linked from there

If you want to be sure, you can always call the registrar and ask.

Who is gonna keep checking if your parents move out? Plus, they only care about your residency.

I am a current student, so it seems that if my dad had to move for his job, I wouldn’t need to reclassify. I would just continue to pay in-state tuition.

Thanks for your responses!
