Hi, I'm a 24 year old grad. student who's doing a thesis track in history. I need another semester to finish and because I didn't finish my thesis, I fell 6 hours short for qualifying for federal financial aid. I'm at a loss at what to do with my only solution to borrow from a bank for the semester. I'm looking for any help or suggestions!

Most universities will allow you take a leave of absence and complete your thesis on your own time. You will probably have to pay for a special one day registration necessary to defend your thesis when it is finished, and there may be a time limit by which you have to complete it. Check with the grad school administration to find out if this is possible.

Any fluff classes you could throw in? Anything that looks interesting at all. Shoot, might even be a freshman intro to astronomy. Or the infamous underwater basket weaving.

I guess I should have been more precise in my first post. I’ve lost access to Federal Aid for the upcoming year because I fell 6 hours short this past year. In order to get that money back, I would need to come with 6 hours somehow before the school year starts back up.

Does it matter if they’re undergrad? If not, I’d think of online summer courses. Second sessions are starting soon and some schools are still taking registrations for them.

kd3045, I am not understanding you. How do you lose aid for the following term because you didn’t take enough credits last term? Did you get caught up in Unsatisfactory Academic Progress? Even if that is the case, I still don’t get it.

Okay, start at the beginning. EXACTLY why did you lose financial aid? Did you lose it for last semester or for the fall semester? If you lost it for last semester, how does adding 6 credits in the fall semester fix what you lost spring semester? How many credits do you currently have for fall semester? How does adding 6 credits help that?

Are you saying that all you have left for fall is 6 hours … and that you’ll only get aid if you have 12? That is only sort-of correct … so if you can tell me exactly what type of aid you think you’ll get, that would be helpful.

I am an aid administrator. I might be able to give you some advice, but I don’t understand your situation based on the info you’ve given so far.
