lost in the world of recruiting... help!

pianoforte, answer brandnew in a PM if you wish. You guys could probably help each other out, but the public forum isn’t a great place for it. If you guys end up getting married, you will need to invite everyone who posts on the CC athletic recruiting page, of course. Best wishes to you both.

^^^I expect an invite, I love weddings!

This thread just made my day :)

hey guys thank for all the responses/ support  we just got the results of one of the financial pre-reads though… it’s not looking so good, and I’m assuming the other school won’t offer much more. I haven’t made any final decisions yet, but I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth it letting my parents go thousands of dollars into debt for an ivy league education, especially since I have a full-ride at a nearby school that is consistently ranked in the top 25 because my dad is a professor there.

Umm scratch that we figured it out :)

Great news, piano!

Looking forward to hearing the big news Piano.
Glad the fin pre-read has gone well.

If the school your dad is a prof at–offers great finaid and is a great school, and you are accepted there…give it long consideration.
School debt for a different brand name is not worth it. The schools have to offer demonstratively different things (programs/opportunities etc ) beyond a name …if that school is wonderful…weigh options carefully.

Best wishes.

Piano-I have a different opinion. Paying extra for “the best” has been shown to be a good investment in terms of future earnings and grad school admissions, mostly because of the alumni network.

My sons had free ride at top 50 school, both are now at Midd. We figured out that divided by your whole life, it really isn’t that expensive.

My older son spent a semester at said “free” school because he was accepted for Feb admission at Midd. While the profs were excellent, the students couldn’t compare in terms of interest, preparation, and abilities IN GENERAL. Of course there are exceptions. Coursework was easier because he was the top of the pile there.

So while we had hoped he might stay at the free school and save us $60,000, we are happy he is at Midd.

We haven’t had to borrow as much as we thought because having 2 sons out of the house freed up more money than we expected that we were spending on groceries, gas, HS fees(private coaching etc) and the electric bill.We are driving ancient cars and staying home for vacation.

If you can go to a significantly higher ranked school, and you feel it will meet your needs better, I think the sacrifice is worth it.

Good point^ I guess since we don’t know which schools pianoforte is considering, we don’t know how much of a difference there is between them.
That said, a tour guide at our kiddos U told the group that their family only pays about 10k a yr…and that is a drop in the bucket considering the total COA.
For that kind of very economical tab, it would be tough to compete

Ugh this waiting is the worst thing ever. I wish both coaches would just tell me if they will support me or not now!

hang in there, piano. It’s October 3rd. It’s possible for this take until close to the end of the month. Your torture is short and acute compared to kids who wait for the RD round and opt for the prolonged, grinding kind.

…and of course once you get word that you’re being put up for a LL, there’s the agonizing wait for admissions to issue the thing.

oh varska, what a sweet thing to say to this poor child. :)

haha, sorry piano!

^ Right.

Our student was explained the LL process on the OV…
had to wait 2-3 weeks for the other OVs…though was told to “not worry”
Got a call mid Oct.
Kid pressed submit on Common App w suppplement next day (which was completed before OV) and had to wait for snail mail of LORs to school.
Finally had GC fax LORs to school which was still waiting more than a week later…
Got the LL in the mail by Nov 1.
The time between that OV and the LL was as River etc described…
and it is worth it
It is nice to be done before you “smell the turkey” and
—as Dec 15 approaches and the FINAL announcement can be made…and you cruise into spring DONE…you will be happy for every pratice you did and ever test you took…all of the work up front IS worth it!

Hang in there Piano!

Ok so my number two choice called and offered me a supported spot (gasp!). I called my number one choice and she told me that she couldn’t let me know until Tuesday. Ahhhh! So I really don’t want to be left without either, and I’d rather not gamble with something this important…and advice?

Hi piano,
I was hoping this would be simple and you’d get the calls in the right order! I’m sure you were, too.
How did your conversation end with your number two choice? Did you say you’d get back in touch tomorrow, or do you have a little more time?
And what was your feeling from number one? Having you wait almost a week hints to me that you might not be in the top few on her list and that she’s waiting to get answers from the girls ahead of you.
How easy would it be for you to fall in love with number two? Do you like everything about the school, the location, the academic strengths? Do you feel like you fit with the other kids at the school?

Sorry I forgot to add that she said I have until Friday to let her know. And I honestly love my number two. It’s amazing. My number one is only winning by inches haha.

Sounds like you’re in a great spot, piano! Personally I would embrace #2 and make a call to #1 tomorrow just to say, ‘thank you - I appreciate everything you’ve done for me but <school 2=“”> has offered me a spot and I feel I need to take it’</school>

Worst case - you’re in at #2 and #1 thinks you’re pretty classy for calling to thank her.
Best case, #1 says - ‘hold the presses - we’re not letting you go’

varska, as usual, is spot on!
