Lost! Where to get loans

<<<<
It looks like this:

blue Award 7500
Grant 2225
Fed Perkins loan 750
Fed Sub Direct loan 1750
Fed unsub direct loan 1000

Something isn’t right…this does not add up to $19k of aid.

However, if you double the blue award and double the grant, that’s approx $19k of aid

that was one semester.

^it still doesn’t add up… :frowning:

I’m thinking that she means that the grants/scholly add up to about $19k of (free money) aid if you double the amounts.

When are Perkins loans going away?

This student already has the Direct Loan and Perkins in their financial aid package. I would strongly suggest that $20,000 in additional loans or close to it…are too much in loans…

$20,000 a year would mean $80,000 in loans…plus college costs will increase annually…and there will be interest on those loans. This would leave someone paying probably onnexcess of $1000 a month for ten years to repay these loans.

Surely there is a less costly way for, this student to get an undergraduate degree.

the challenge once you take the package, back out OP’s 10,000 EFC, there is a gap of $5894…It would take a little stretching for the student to get a summer job (2-3k) and parent chipping in a little more. However, parent can only meet 5 of the 10K EFC leaving a ~11k gap making the school an unaffordable option

Family needs to look at school where student can use 5k that parent can afford to pay along with the $5500 loan. Will family be eligible for Cal grant if D attends a CC?

@sybbie719 <<< the challenge once you take the package, back out OP’s 10,000 EFC, there is a gap of $5894…It <<<

I think it’s worse than that. The COA that the mom is quoting seems to NOT include books, fees, personal expenses or travel (or any health insurance if needed). AND, the mom can only pay $5k, not $10k of the EFC.

Ok, if the D is struggling in math, maybe it would be better to start at a community college to catch up on math and have a solid foundation for when she transfers to the 4 yr school. CA community colleges are very good and should be affordable.

Hello!

I just want to say thank you to you all for your input.

We had the talk about the reality of it all and my kid was not happy, there were tears and it was the hardest conversation to date. I told her it would be irresponsible of me to allow her to incur that much debt.

However, after the dust settled and we put on our thinking caps, she researched a local CC. Its kind of a drive, but heck, its closer than Iowa! We found that there is a golf team there, I reached out to the coach and YES next week he is meeting with us and she has l already applied. I will be filling out the fasfa later today. The coach is “fired up”. “Usually kids like her golf for 4 year colleges.” Well, coach this is your lucky day!

We texted the coach in Iowa, who we think is the nicest person and my kid loves him, to let him know. He has now contacted her this morning and said that they are offering more grant money and she should hear from them later today. I think its too late. If they want to pick a kid from California who is good at her sport and drop her in Iowa, then they need to be a little more generous out of the gate. They recruited her!

Here’s the kicker. …“But mom, I don’t want to go to Iowa now.” OMG… I laughed until I almost cried.

Again, we need to steer our kids, and sometimes (for me anyway) I take the long way around and I caused a lot of unnecessary anxiety, but we got to where she needs to be in the end and that is all that matters.

xoxox Thank you guys.

That’s awesome, @dmc2017. Your daughter is very mature and well grounded to have landed on her feet so quickly. Let us know how it works out.

Your daughter sounds very mature.
Compare the new offer - who knows, it may be affordable now.
But if she no longer wants to go to Iowa…

Cool!!! I am glad it is working out. Your daughter is learning great there is more than one route to take you from point A to point B. This way she gods in California, finishes CC then transfers to the UC or CSU 4 year program to play more golf. All the best

Good news! And if that other school offers a TON of money (not just a bit more), then consider that as well.

But…the CC to 4 year route is still a good one for an athlete

So happy! I wish your D the best.

Congrats on having a mature daughter. I’m thinking now of the thousands of kids in Iowa who are probably dying to go to school in CA. I can’t imagine that kind of debt. I’m so glad for you to have discovered CC.

Hi there! Yes, she did bounce back quickly. I laughed so hard. I didn’t think about it as being mature, but it really is. I haven’t heard what the new offer is yet, but I think unless its a full ride, which is not going to happen, my kid is now set on SB! Thank you all! I especially appreciate your no holes barred, this is the facts kind of tone! It really woke me up!

xoxoxox

Your daughter is lucky you have helped keep her grounded and won’t let you and her get mired in tons of crushing debt. Great job!

Hurrah!!! Take advantage of this reset button and make sure she gets help in math if she needs it so that her options are wide open in two years. The lucky CC golf coach might be able to point you to the right on-campus resources.

Fwiw I know two amazing baseball players that started at CC to save $$, both transferred junior year (brothers, a couple of years apart) into UCSB and Santa Clara respectively, had amazing junior and senior years for their 4 year college teams as well.

CC to 4 year can be a great path for you D, let’s her take care of the math issue and with the cal state system really provides her with a ton of toptions!

Thank you all!
