Hi guys,
Emory is my dream school but I unfortunately can not raise my ACT score. I am continually receiving a 24 on my test and don't know what to do. I'm a rising senior who will be applying soon.
I have great ECs, volunteer hours, and took very difficult classes and got good grades for those classes.
My GPA is a 3.7 and my essays have been reviewed and are said to be exceptional.
My aunt and uncle both attended Emory. So I have legacy (I'm white).
Is there any chance of me getting in? How can I increase my chances?
I really need to get in here or else my family will be ashamed of me.

Your scores are low and your legacy isn’t from your parents. Emory is a reach.

Your gpa is okay/below average for emory but your act score is exceptionally low. This reveals to emory that your gpa is inflated because with that gpa, you are expected to score much higher on the ACT. Even with great ECs and essays, I would say you have little to zero chance of making it into Emory.

Legacies only count if they are from your parents or grandparents. On the Common App, it only asks about your parents’ education history. So you wouldn’t have legacy status at Emory.

Actually, on Emory’s Common App supplement the question is simply “Have any relatives attended Emory?” so you might be a legacy. But legacies don’t really receive as much of a bump as people think they do. See this article from a Dartmouth admissions officer: <a href=“Secrets of Dartmouth Admissions Office”>Secrets of Dartmouth Admissions Office;

Try studying more, or just take the SAT!

How do you explain your low ACT with your high GPA? You won’t get into Emory with that combination. Did you try the SAT?

parents legacy would be better. emory does not look too much on essays. why not have a try of sat in oct?
maybe the act just doesn’t fit your style

Thanks everyone for your responses. I’m going to retake the ACTs and hopefully can score higher. I need to figure out a way into this school!

Do you think if i scored 26+ I would have a better chance with legacy?

It out of reach for Emory. Get at least a 30, ideally 32+.
reach for Oxford at Emory (back door in). Get a 27 for Oxford
I think legacy is only for parents and grandparents, I might be wrong though
