Low GPA from prestigous school vs. high GPA from decent school

Hello, I am currently a junior at the Haas school of business at UC berkeley. My GPA will most likely only be in the 3.3-3.5 range when I graduate from here in 2012. Will I be able to compete with other students that graduated from less prestigious undergrad b-schools who have a higher GPA when applying for MBA programs?

I have a friend who is currently at USC Marshall school of business who has a 4.0 gpa, but he says all his classes are fairly easy. i'm kinda dissapointed now bc i knew him since high school and he wasn't as smart as me...and i'm at uc berkeley trying to the best i can but i wont be able to get higher than a 3.5 gpa when i graduate.

so in general, when u apply for MBA programs, do they care more about the prestige/ranking of your undergraduate program or more about ur GPA?

There isn’t a HUGE difference between Marshall and Haas. There is a marked difference, though, but it isn’t enough to explain a .7 difference in GPA. Although Haas is notorious for competition/grade deflation, GPA is going to be a huge factor. While Haas is more prestigious than Marshall, it isn’t enough to explain that much of a difference in GPA.

thanks for the reply. i guess i’m screwed

not really. A 3.5 is on target for HYPS if you’re from a good school. Average at Stanford is only a 3.6 and this includes those form noname schools.

Ace the GMAT, get in good work experience and write a killer essay for that application and you’ll get into a top program.
