low GPA & high sat

generally speaking, within the top 20 undergrad schools, which ones should I apply to if I have relatively low GPA and high SAT scores?

Define low gpa and high SAT…

GPA: 3.83 UW
SAT 1510 (the schools I’m interested in only look at CR+M).

SAT it’s that abnormal (whether high or low), but my GPA is quite low. And I only rank in the 15-20% range (my school won’t tell me exactly where).

I can’t even take in the amount of insecurity you have regardless if this thread is a joke or not. Thinking that an 3.8 UW GPA is low is blasphemy.

i wish I had your test score… ;(

He’s just saying that the GPA is comparatively lower than most competitive candidates, but his SAT score is more like top-notch.

Well, I’m in a Canadian school so the GPA is calculated differently. A=4.00=>86% B=3.00=>73%. Much lower standard that in the US. I don’t even want to think how low my GPA will go if calculated by US standards (3.5-3.6? if that)

Um, I would say your SAT is low and your GPA is high…

it’s 1510 out of 1600… low?

oh figured it was out of 2400

I wouldn’t consider either of those low at all. Don’t worry about it.

An unweighed GPA of 3.83 is not even close to being low mine is a 3.86 unweighed and 4.49 weighed!! and 1510/1600 is remarkable for top schools!!

you really didnt get him
he said his schools only use CR + math for evaluation… so 1600 is the consideration wrt them.

3.83 UW is not even close to low. Shut up.

Everything’s relative so I can see how you could think 3.83 is low if its only 15%-20%. I don’t think you’d be excluded anywhere from it but might have to work a lot harder on other stuff on your apps for some of the very top schools which have the majority in the 5%-10% of their class if not higher.

Rank is what matters, a GPA is only useful when we have the context of the school.

At most top 20 schools, 90 plus percent of the accepted students are in the top 10% of their classes. When you consider that this includes athletes, minorities, legacies etc., it is unlikely many unhooked candidates outside of their school’s top 10% make it in.

I think you would do best at the top tier state schools like UVA, UNC, Michigan and Berkeley because your SAT scores are standout at those schools and they tend to look at numbers over context. Some of them are ranked in the 20’s.

I didnt go thru the entire thread but here is our situation

combined SAT 1230 (no prep we told just take and see what happens)
GPA 2.0

my son was diagnosed early on as border line ADD recommendations from both doctors were not to medicate, we agreed.

Loren (as told) by every teacher without fail indicated that if he would not forget his daily assignments would have a B or A in all the classes.

Loren will ace a test and loose all homework assignments.

any recommendation out there on an approach to college ? Here are our thoughts:

make personal case to good liberal arts school (small)

do gap year with americore to let loren gain some fire in his belly for self organization.

take SAT again and prepare this time and shoot for over 1300.
By they way he is a very good ultimate player

assist and ideas appreciated.

This thread is basically the same as a thread I started a few days ago. It is a topic impossible to search (SAT + GPA would bring up every post on every thread).

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/603402-sat-s-gpa-where-apply.html

It would be nice to find schools that are especially partial to high SAT’s, however, no one has identified any. Perhaps all the schools have undistinguishable GPA and SAT admit scattergrams.

lorensdad, I’d make your question a separate thread. My daughter has similar issues and it will be interesting to read the responses. Btw, she started Adderall this year (Jr year) and is getting As and Bs in Honors classes, with a lot of ECs, where she was only getting Bs, Cs & an occasional D (the ultimate red flag) in regular classes and no Ecs last year. She’s a lot happier too. The med step was a big one to take, but ultimately seems right for her.

I think you’re fine. That’s an excellent SAT and very good grades.
