Hi, @taverngirl thanks for the reply! I have not looked into UHart, Quinnipiac (I don’t think they offer CE from my knowledge) or UMaine much and I definitely will. It’s always very nice to hear that I’m not alone when it comes to lower grades in my intended major! Your son looks like he has a great list with a bunch of great schools. I hope he finds the one that is the best fit for him in the near future!
WVU, has a very good ABET accredited engineering school with lots of opportunity. Also big time college sports if that interests you. What is the highest level of math you will have completed in HS?
@racereer Thanks for the comment. I have not looked into WVU until just now. It looks like a good school and a good engineering program! It’s a little far from home for me but thank you for the suggestion! I will have completed Pre-Calc by the time I graduate.
Also as an update for the post as a whole, these are my admissions decisions so far:
Central Connecticut State University: Have not applied yet
RIT: Applied
Roger Williams: Accepted
Seton Hall (3+2 Engineering): Accepted
UMass Dartmouth: Accepted
Wentworth Institute of Technology: Accepted
Western New England University: Accepted
I have since removed WPI from my list as I would not even go there if I ever miraculously got in, as the academics would be too challenging for me personally.
Thanks, everyone for the comments, suggestions, and support!
@lbassett_21 My son is a freshman at Wentworth and it’s the perfect fit for him. He is pretty high stats and is nearly sophomore standing with AP and community college classes but the hands on nature of his courses along with the coop requirements make it a win for him.
If you decide to enroll, brushing up on calc will be important if it’s not a strength for you as they have a mid-term exam where students are dropped if they can’t pass after a few tries. This happened to my son’s roommate. I’ve read that while Wentworth is relatively easy to get in, getting out is pretty hard. From my perspective (and I work at a college) they weed the weaker students so by sophomore year, students can do the work.
His dad actually works at Roger Williams and their engineering is general but that new building will likely change everything. And Clarkson…after my car died on the way home from the accepted students day it came off the list! That place is in the middle of nowhere.
UMass Dartmouth is likely a good fit but the campus… I refused to go there for college simply because of the dreadful campus. My son received full tuition and fees there so it was likely his second choice, but so many of his graduating class goes there and we wanted him to experience something new.
I’m curious where you ended up and how it worked out? My son is in a similar boat.
CT resident here. Friends’ kids have gone to Central CT State U for engineering, including computer engineering, and done very well there, got personal attention and support, got good jobs afterwards. It’s an excellent, inexpensive option for CT residents with less than stellar high school records and empty wallets.
