How much does poor HSEB grade affect acceptance?

depends. How poor and how good is the rest of the application? Can the result be explained/justified? And is it only 11 or 12 as well?

@sixstringsrocker >Man Even I got the same problem here in Grade 11…It is just 64.2%…Buh In 12 I’ve boosted to 84.8%…The highest that year was 87…mY SAT is 1310 Composite n 2100 Overall…Besides that I’ve been workin as a digital music producer, n R&B Singer, Rapper n Songwriter since d age of 13 n apart from this have won several ECA’s like debate, essay writings n speech Competition…I do expect to come up with strong recommendations n also some innovative concepts in essays…Do u think I have some possible shots at good universities wid good fin aid if I come up wid good essays…??Lately, I’ve started feelin really insecure coz of my grade 11 marks n CR scores…

You’ll need to justify why you had low grades in 11th. It doesn’t matter what the highest that year was, and no one cares about that. What matters is how you did. Nonetheless, I think your 12th grade scores are very good, so it’ll cover for your grade 11th scores.

If you’re taking your SATs again, you should try and increase the composite. Most colleges place a much higher value on your composite score rather than the total. It doesn’t matter much what ECs you have (unless it’s a very special circumstance where it’s just phenomenal), what matters how your overall application is. If you lack in a lot of places, it won’t do you any magic trick. You need to have a truly stellar and thoughtful essay. That’s for sure.

Short answer to your final question, yes but it depends on how good your application is. 84% is certainly a very good number, and so is 2100 (albeit, you have room for improvement, imo, in CR). You need to make sure you work seriously on your essay. Good luck.

@sixstringsrocker: Thanks for the replies cum advices.
Can you offer some suggestions as to how to write stellar essays? I mean like essay sites, or books or whatever that helps.

Moreover, can you help me on searching colleges that sort of overlook the grades over standardized tests, ECAs but still provide generous financial aids ?

never heard of schools that overlook grades for standardized tests particularly. All the colleges want holistic students. read through old threads like “class of 2014 from nepal” “class of 2013 from Nepal” and look for students with similar situations like yours who got into good schools. no silver bullet.

@sixstringsrocker : thanks for the advice, I shall do the same
