Hi everyone, i'm a new member of CC :D. Although i started researching on colleges 2 years ago, i still feel pretty lost now. Thks a lot if you guys can give some comments on my school list =)
This is my records:
SAT1 2010
SAT2 2370 (Maths 1, Maths 2, Chem)
AP econs mic 4
AP econs mac 5
High School grade Singapore Alevel): percentile
Maths: 50%
Chemistry: 40%
Physics: 30%
Econs: 60%
English: 40%

I'm an international student studying in singapore. I give percentile instead of grades because it reflects better how well/badly i perform compare to other candidates from my school. And this is my list of schools:
Bentley U
Bryant U
Clark U
Quinnipiac U
Fairfield U
Providence college
St John (Queens, NY)
Philadelphia U
University of Iowa
University of Minnesota -twin cities
Major in Business
My family can contribute ~ 30000/year. For schools that cost more than that, i'll ask for fin aid. Pls also give me comments on whether those schools will offer aid for lousy student like me or not :P. THKS A LOT :D

It is extremely difficult for international students to get financial aid. Your classroom grades are not likely to qualify you. You need to look for colleges and universities that your family can pay for without any aid.

Use the search engine here at CC [College Search - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/) and the one at [College Search](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) to look for places that you can afford.

OP –

This is tricky. Some of the adcoms will not be completely familiar with your school in particular, or the grading system in Singapore. I think at least a few of the adcoms will scratch their head about how to translate your Singaporean grades into the American equivalent, then disregard the GPA out of frustration, and make their decision entirely on your SAT and SAT IIs. This would be good news for you indeed.

Some schools where NO financial aid would cost under or just a little over $30,000:

SUNYs – Bingamton, Stony Brook, Geneseo, with Bingamton being the most pre-professional
Minnesota
Alabama
Baylor (SAT scores give you big tuition break, automatically)
Arizona - Honors College ($35k actually)
Oregon ($33k actually)
UMass Amherst ($33k actually)

heymorning,

Does you school send students to the US every year? If so, the staff there might have some good ideas for you.

You also should read through everything at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.state.gov/) Then, make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center in Singapore [EducationUSA - Center Profile - United States Education Information Center (USEIC)](http://www.educationusa.info/centers.php?id=1152) They are the experts on helping students from your country find good places to study in the US, and they will be able to tell you which colleges and universities have admitted students with your profile in the last few years.

What is your SAT breakdown?

Can Dunnin provide the link that shows where he’d get big merit from Baylor?

What stats are needed for Arizona’s honors college?

mom2: [Baylor University | Texas Undergraduate University Admissions, Texas University Undergraduate programs at accredited Baylor University || Scholarship Calculator Spring 2010 (v2)](<a href=“Undergraduate Admissions | Baylor University”>Undergraduate Admissions | Baylor University)

Plug in 650 and 650 for SAT, and 50/100 for class rank, and a $10,000 merit scholarship appears in this calculator. I did not see any wording exempting Int’l students from this.

$39,000 Tuition+Room+fee+Board - $10,000 = $29,000

Per the Baylor site I found this: “As an undergraduate international student, you may be considered for Baylor’s Regents’ Gold Scholarship (full tuition), the President’s Gold Scholarship, Provost’s Gold Scholarship or the Deans’ Gold Scholarship per the guidelines listed on financial aid web site.” [Baylor University | Texas Undergraduate University Admissions, Texas University Undergraduate programs at accredited Baylor University || Scholarships for International Students](<a href=“Undergraduate Admissions | Baylor University”>Undergraduate Admissions | Baylor University)

thks a lot guys!!!
I was totally lost the night before i post this thread. Now, i feel much relieved.
Yep. My school is the no1 in Singapore for the past few years and internationally recognized. Kids from my school apply to ivy leagues. Their academic records are amazing though, not screwed up as mine. I actually talked to my school counselor and he suggested me schools like Kalamazoo(which i really dont like), U of Iowa, U of Minnesota-Twin Cities which i find ok. What do you guys think of them or any other suggestion?
My dad actually told me abt a service which will “translating” high school grades to US edu system. But every application from my school must be gone through school portal and vetted by school counselors. So i’m afraid doing smt like that will be considered dishonest/underhanded.
My SAT1 score breakdown is:
CR: 650
Math: 770
Writing:680

@mom2collegekids: Thks a lot!!! I just researched a bit on it and found it quite suitable for me. Although it doesnt offer aid at all to intl students, the cost is quite affordable But the thing that i’m concerned is the location. How is it like in Alabama? My dad really wants me to be in new england. I know my grades are too lousy for most schools in New England but do you have any suggestion? For now, i still consider Alabama a really good choice, thks again =)

sorry for the spam…
I think baylor is still quite hard for me. % admitted is only 50%. Plus, if i ask for fin aid which is around 10k or scholarship, my chance of getting admitted even goes lower. Correct me if this is a misunderstanding :)

Maybe University of Connecticut? It’s supposed to be the best public university in the Northeast with beautiful facilities.

My D is a freshman at the Univ of Iowa and really enjoying it. Very nice campus, friendly people, easy to fly into (airport 30 minutes away), growing international/diverse population, strong school spirit, Big 10 sports scene.

OP, your impression is incorrect re: Baylor. You will most certainly gain admittance, and with the scholarship… at a minimum, you should apply.

Dunnin…until we know how his grades translate, I don’t think we can be certain that he’d get that scholarship. From that website, Baylor indicates that it takes rank into consideration. If the student’s rank is around 50% of his class, then he would only get about $5k per year. If it’s worse than that, he’d get nothing.

*I know my grades are too lousy for most schools in New England *

Since we don’t know what your grades translate to, are you saying that your grades are somewhere in the middle at your school? Do many of your classmates have better grades?

Maths: 50%
Chemistry: 40%
Physics: 30%
Econs: 60%
English: 40%

Can you give us some insight as to what a 30% in Physics or 40% in Chemistry means? Does it mean that 70% and 60% of students did better than you? I have no idea how the A-Levels and O-Levels work.

I emailed USEIC to ask for translation of grades today and i think they’ll answer me soon…
You are right, 30% means that 70% of cohort performed better than me. The thing is these grades is school internal exams ,not Alevel. Teachers use this grades and predict Alevel grades. This predicted grades are not seen by students and they will be sent to US colleges. Since my school is the best one in singapore, a C for Chem in school will be predicted as A for Alevel.
Basically, i’m an average student in a geniuses’ school. Comparing to candidates from Singapore,i’m ok but comapring to kids from my school, i’m really really in trouble.
Thanks!!!
