Low Income Student in UC system, High Income Student in CC system

All students are low income, not base on parents. I think it’s not fair. I saw the students from low income families are attending UC system, but high income student are atteding Community College. Is it fair?

It’s not true that only low income attend the UCs and high income the CCs.

talk about both students( low & high) had accepted, low income got free, high income parent can’t afford to pay so they have to go for CC school.Low income is not really low income ( got a lot of free) plus work with money under table so they become high income and living on the nice home while high income living in apartment. If not believe go to low income will see they are very healthy people.

Why should high income families get as much aid as low income families? High income households can afford to put more money towards college so why shouldn’t they? Also don’t assume that all low incomes are secretly high income by working under the table. That’s just absurd. Don’t tell me you really think low incomes live in nice homes and higher incomes live in small apartments. Are you saying there are absolutely no low income people and they are all just hiding their money?

@Brian1990

Yeah, it’s a travesty that my overprivileged children get no FA, but only get nannys and vacations in Europe or exotic ski trips every year…

Meanwhile those FA-receiving lower income kids have to take care of younger siblings and work beginning at age 16 to make ends meet in their household.

Maybe the CC student wants to save money? Maybe they want to stay close to home? Maybe the UC student got a full scholarship like Gates? One anecdote doesn’t change the fact that students at CC’s tend to be lower income and students at UC’s and other highly ranked schools tend to not be low income.

Your post is not backed by data. The wide majority of students enrolled in the CA CC system are lower and lower middle income.
Plenty of middle income and high income kids attend the UCs. Their parents think it’s worth it to pay the rather low costs.
Obviously, if your EFC is higher than the cost of a UC, you’re not going to get financial aid, and if you EFC is lower than the UC costs, you’ll get financial aid. On top of it, if you’re really smart, you’ll get Regents, even if your parents make 300K.
In which state do you think high income families get financial aid so their child can attend their state’s flagship exactly?

Actually, in all states, the in state tuition is subsidized so that even high income people benefit from a subsidy, even though it is not called financial aid.

I talk about at low side of high income can’t afford to pay for tuition, but very high is OK. any way all kids have the same income.

can’t afford to pay school that why stay close to home. low income is free money that why they spend money , not stay home and enjoy. high income pay for them.

why you not get Regents, and your parent is not smart to help you, let you get free money that is not nice. someone else pay for you

If you think that CA needs to lower the in-state costs for the UCs and CSUs so that it is easier for middle class families to afford them, then you need to lobby the CA state government about that. Maybe you can convince the state to do this.

Until then, you should be happy that CA has such a strong CC system, and such a clear pathway for students who start at a CC. In many other states the CCs vary greatly from one county to another, the courses aren’t standardized at all, and it is difficult for the students to find out what they need to do in order to transfer to the university where they want to finish their degrees.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
If this thread is just going to go around in circles, I see no reason to keep it open. The original post has made claims that others have tried to disprove, but there seems to be no open-to-listen from the OP.
