*My GD told me that I'm currently taking the most challenging courses and that I'm on my way to becoming valedictorian. My school does not provide any AP courses and only a couple of Honors classes per grade (it's a VERY small school with only 100 high school students)...but I've never had anything below an A on my report card.

*Won the Mid-South Regional award for Best Community Service. Even earned a trip to Washington, D.C. and met the Tennessee Senators.

*All the money that I've earned from working goes straight to paying my high school tuition, and I've probably raised $5,000 a year (16 hours a week).

College essay = great. Through Memphis Challenge (a program for highly achieving minority Memphians), I had it reviewed by a professional writer that works in the FedEx Communications Team, and she said that it will definitely stand out in a stack of other essays (I wrote about how scraping off gum during my first and only detention helped me to discover my leadership potential).

My history teacher (of 2 years) wrote me an excellent letter, and my math teacher (of 3 years) wrote me an appropriately funny yet stellar letter. My former corporate employer (who is the community relations dept manager of a highly respected regional hospital) wrote an excellent letter as well, praising my work ethic and accomplishments at the job. My GD also told me that the letter she wrote is significantly better than the rest of my peers.

I also had an interview with a Vandy alum, who is now a laywer, and we had the best time. In fact, it didn't even feel like an interview, more like a friendly conversation (we found out that we both love playing flag football). She promised to write me the best evaluation report.

I've been assured that the test scores are only a fraction of what Vanderbilt considers, so hopefully, my academics, ECs, and recs will make up for it. I've met the college admissions counselor three times in person (the third time, she already memorized my name and approached me and said hi while at a college fair), and I've also been keeping in contact with her occasionally through email and phone.

I've been dreaming of attending Vanderbilt ever since 6th grade, and I plan on majoring in the Medicine, Health and Society program. As I read back on this post, it make me look VERY conceited, but I'm just making myself sound better than I actually am! Haha, I'm just curious to see what you guys think. :)

I got into Vanderbilt last year, and although I turned it down, it sounds like you have a good chance! My test scores were higher than yours (31 on ACT) but your grades are higher than mine! It also seems like you’ve formed a good relationship with the admissions officer, which definitely helps a lot! They knew me as well, and I got in over friends who had better grades and scores!
Good luck.

Thank you, Bakerita! May I ask what college are you attending now?

bump…
