Hello CC,

I am currently majoring at NYU in physics. Its physics program is ranked #40 in the US (according to USNews), so I want to aim higher. By this May I will have finished my first year.

NYU is one of the most expensive colleges in the US, and money has become a big issue for my family recently. Therefore, does anybody have any recommendations for colleges which are, compared to NYU, BOTH:

1) Cheaper overall, and
2) Has higher-ranked physics programs?

Best,
MikeEcho

Other than exploring what you might be awarded through financial aid, your best bet is going down the physics rankings and picking out the state schools, but as an out of state student many aren’t that cheap. What state are you from?

International, actually. :(

What’s your price limit? Any subfields you’re interested in? Here are some possibilities:

SUNY Stony Brook
University of Minnesota
Ohio State University
Iowa State University
North Carolina State University

If you want colleges which are even cheaper, you’ll have to look at schools lower down the rankings. Even at those places there may be only 7 physics majors a year for around 20+ faculty meaning that doing research might be relatively easy if you volunteer to work without pay.

Canadian universities might also be a possibility although I don’t know how they deal with international transfer students. One of my former bosses did his undergrad at U Waterloo and went on to get a phD at Cal Tech.
