Based on your opinion and previous knowledge which is a better school. Both of them cost the same and have the same size but which one is more academically superior? I am planning to study finance btw. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.
What are your goals with a finance degree? These two schools have about an equal academic reputation and are both regional religiously-affiliated colleges that most people outside the region will not know very well.
My goal with the finance degree is to work for a major bank in a city. Cities include: NYC, Boston, Chicago, and providence. I understand both are reputable but which would help me get to where I’m going
While both schools are Jesuit regional universities, Loyola has a highly ranked business school that is definitely recognized outside of the region. It is also part of the Patriot League, which has increased its exposure and recognition. My D is a junior at Loyola and I have been surprised how many people outside of the area recognize the name. Many of her friends that have graduated from the business school have landed jobs with large companies and banks in Baltimore and NYC.
Both universities are of the same caliber academically FWIW.
Offhand I think Loyola MD is slightly more selective but you can look up the statistics yourself. They are both very nice Jesuit universities. See where you get in, what your aid is at both schools etc. and then decide. You might also look into Fairfield (CT), Fordham (NYC), and St. Joes (Phiila).
I would give Loyola a slight academic edge and the location has better opportunities for internships. However, Scranton is more generous with scholarship money.
Keep in mind that finance tends to be more prestige oriented; it may be much more difficult to land certain positions (for ex. IBanking) with a Loyola Maryland/Scranton degree.
I am not sure which one I would choose as more selective; neither one is particularly selective. However, I think a large edge in recruiting, internships, and alum connections goes to Loyola.
Fordham would be a more difficult admit, and would probably serve you better with connections.
I read in another thread your stats are GPA 2.7/ACT 31.
LMU finds GPA “very important”, but test scores are only “considered”. It may be a reach.
You could consider La Salle, quite similar to Saint Joe’s. I’m a freshman at LSU, and I’m enjoying it! Our financial/merit aid is more generous.
I am partial to the Jesuit schools and one cannot go wrong choosing either Scranton or Loyola. I believe it comes down to picking the best fit both academically and financially. I do believe the US News rankings are only one data point and a lot more information is needed for one’s college decision. Loyola’s Sellinger undergrad was ranked by US News #22 in Marketing in 2017, #29 in Accounting, #22 in Finance, #24 in International Business, and #18 in Marketing in 2016, #19 in Accounting and #15 in Finance in 2015. The MBA program was ranked by US News #24 in Accounting, #21 in Finance, and #18 in Information Systems in 2017.
The bottom line is that one can receive an excellent education at both Scranton’s Kania and Loyola’s Sellinger Business Schools.
Loyola and other Jesuit schools have traditionally done very well in salary surveys.
