Hello everyone. I was admitted to LSA yesterday and am unbelievably excited I got the email inviting me to apply for Honors college but I wanted to ask those of you that know… is it worth it? I intend on attending Law School after undergrad and I know GPA matters A LOT for Law School, so is taking harder classes worth the trouble of trying to keep my GPA up? and even aside from GPA, what are the benefits of being in the Honors program?
I was wondering the same thing. I also got into LSA yesterday, and plan on attending med school in the future. I think that if the Honors classes seem super unique and immersive, and if the class sizes are smaller in Honors (better interaction with professors), then it really may be worth it.
Ok, as someone who has been rejected from honors, I understand if you take my advice with a grain of salt.
As an honors student, you get housing on South, which means you’re at the center of most of your classes. This is great for winter and general laziness :P. Another perk is that you get better advising.
Classes are not necessarily smaller, but some are. You will obviously have more work in each class.
Just because you’re in the honors college does NOT guarantee that you’ll graduate with Honors. If you are not in an honors major (for example, in junior year you can decide to do honors anthropology. You will then have to write a senior thesis), you will not graduate with honors. To apply for an honors major, you need to have a 3.4 GPA.
In the end, I’d say honors is worth it, but make sure you know you won’t necessary graduate with honors as some students think they will.
Agree with @woah16 in most aspects. The classes you take aren’t necessarily harder (i.e. Honors Orgo II had a huge curve as opposed to Regular Orgo II), and a lot of times the classes you take won’t even be any different than kids in general LSA.
