Lying about ethnicity to get into college??

For the National Hispanic Recognition Program you need to be 25% Hispanic (one grandparent)… that is soemthing to consider.

I had no idea jesus works in college admissions.

“Identifying with the culture” is not a prerequisite. I know a number of biracial white/asian kids who can’t speak any asian language. They’re still part asian.

Unless the school or scholarship program specifies a percentage, the one drop rule prevails.

Elizabeth Warren…any questions?

@GMTplus7 Well He does. ;)

I know the Common App doesn’t set any percentage rules…Ethically speaking, though, there’s an implicit limit, IMHO.

One drop rule? Lol don’t get me started on that one…

She is technically Hispanic so you can’t really blame her for wanting to take advantage of an already questionable system. However, if the circumstances are realized by colleges, admissions officers may frown on it.

2-3% is not Hispanic… Your friend is disgusting and I hope she gets caught and faces severe repercussions. The people defending her on here are gross as well. It’s a slap in the face to come up to me with your 2% milk self and have the nerve to tell me you belong to a culture your ancestors probably raped their way into

“She is technically Hispanic.”

No, not really. 3%? LOL

Which is why…

“admission officers may frown upon it.”

Maybe she should call the colleges and ask, though. To verify. ;)

Just my opinion, though. :slight_smile: She can do whatever she chooses to.

@Jellybae‌ College admissions is also “disgusting” so what’s the problem? :p

Why are you so bitter please go outside and feel the touch of a human or something you need to chill @absentions‌

@Jellybae LOL you’re calling me bitter when you just suggested that OP’s friend’s ancestors “raped” their way into Hispanic culture…

@Jellybae,

Just wow… What part of “Hispanic can be of any race” do you not understand?

100% Caucasian people can be hispanic. Spaniards are hispanic.

I suggest the OP’s friend contact the college and ask the admissions people what their criteria is for the hispanic category. Is it OK that your ancestor is a conquistador? Or do you necessarily have to be the descendent of a rape by a conquistador? :-?

If the person in question were 3% non-Hispanic Asian instead, I wonder how many replies this thread would’ve gotten…

I bet a simple “No, she’s not Asian. She doesn’t have to mark it, don’t worry about it.” would’ve sufficed. And the thread would’ve moved down.

But I guess percentages only matter when it’s most convenient. :)

@Lilliana330‌ Of course percentages are used in favor of the person, just like they’re always used in favor of colleges. Why on earth would anyone put that they’re Asian unless they are 100% Asian on a college application? That makes no sense.

@‌absentions Sooo 3% (non-Hispanic) Asian isn’t enough? The horror…These three-percenters shouldn’t be shunned this way…It’s discrimination.

Oh, the double standards…I rest my case. :)

@absentions What would you put if you’re 90% Asian? 75%?
When mixed race comes in, which one do you pick?
What if you’re like me, who is 95% white, but grew up among Asian and Black family members just as much, if not more so, than White ones?
Using the one drop rule, pretty much everyone is everything if you get the family tree and microscope out.
This is where race in college admissions gets me, where just a little snippet of DNA, a relatively insignificant piece of your life, can make such a difference.

@BurgerMan1 When mixed races comes in (at least IMHO), I would most definitely put the way that would favor ME in college admissions, meaning the one that would give me an advantage. I’m not saying that I would put I was white if I was 10% white (you wouldn’t even be able to tell by my appearance) because I PERSONALLY don’t want to take any risks during college admissions. But if I had was 75% Asian and 25% White (you would be able to tell by my apperance) then hell yes I would put White. It’s the difference between needing to get a 2350+ on the SAT and needing a 2100.

^Sorry - so many typos.

Really GMT?? Way to set a good example, sheesh. So if the 1 drop rule applies, I guess everybody is a URM. Sure. Yep. Okay then.

Please tell me I am not understanding you…is it sarcasm?

Of course I’m being sarcastic.
