My friend lied about his race and being first generation as well as a bunch of extra curriculurs and his whole personal essay. I think it's messed up but I was wondering is there any way colleges would find out? If so what would happen to him?

Well if he really lied about that much stuff, I’m pretty sure they will find out. It may be after, and if, they accept him, but they will find out. He’ll probably get his acceptance/application revoked.

If the college finds out, he’ll get rejected. If they accept him and find his application to be faulty after the fact, he will be expelled. If he gets a diploma and they find that he lied on his application, his degree will be revoked.

If he accepts Federal grants, he can also be prosecuted.

How exactly can one lie about their race? The ECs and essay may be possible, and the first-generation can be a stretch, but race? And I am pretty sure admissions can be revoked over this, he may even be straying into legal trouble with his fibs.

It’s gonna get real if they receive an acceptance letter.

Seriously I would try and advise to pull his applications now or deal with the consequences later (if accepted into the school)

You check the box on common app, say hispanic, even though you are caucasian.

Only area you would have difficulty is lying about being native american since some schools require appropriate identification with a tribe.

I know about that. But what happens once the student arrives at his interview/college? Wouldn’t that be a dead give-away? Such as an Asian with a Chinese name posing as a Hispanic or a pale white posing as an African-American?

**** now I’m really scared for him. He hears from his top college in a few days. He was so sure they could never catch him. I’m gunna show him this thread hopefully he’ll be able to do something about it

A few days??? Bro, your friend is screwed.

I would encourage your friend to send of some honest applications to other schools. If he is accepted and attends under false pretenses his admission will be rescinded. Hopefully there is not some type of “black list”. Frankly it was a very immature thing to do.

That’s a terrible thing to do… I really do wish him luck. Please convince him to do the right thing by fixing it NOW.

idk… ik you guys are freaking out but something like lying about being hispanic… how WOULD they know? maybe you have a great great grandfather who was 25% spanish and u mark ur app as white/hispanic… how would they know if you were being truthful or not? some people don’t have their family history in legal records. even if they do, it’s very rare that they would check it.

as far as resume-type stuff, like EC’s. thats not a problem at all. people who apply to actual JOBS lie about their resume all the time. no one can prove if you did Key club for a year or not. honestly.

personal essay is totally outta the picture. no one will ever know if he lied or not.

maybe you guys are just overreacting. how often do you hear of an acceptance being revoked or legal trouble over lying about something like that? rarely. esp. bigger schools… just trying to give a different point of view here.

What happens if admissions really do go all that and found out? You will never know. Especially if things on application doesn’t make sense or match.
