M.D.- Not for me?

Here are my objectives in life.

I want to attend a well-reputable school, get a career in the medical field helping others with lots of personal interaction with a good salary, get married, and be able to spend time with my husband and family. I want to be able to go out on weekends and not worry about being on call. I want to be able to sit at home some days with my kids and just be able to make cookies with them or help them decorate the house...

Will all of that be impossible if I get a M.D.? I know that the hours are long, people are always on call, etc. I DO want to have a good balance between my work and personal life.

Is M.D. totally not right for me?

You can do all those things occasionally. How often you need to do them may well rule out medicine.

If you want to be able to go camping most weekends -- i.e. 30 weekends every year -- then medicine is out. If you want to do it once every couple months, that works just fine.

depends on what you want to do in medicine. in general medicine is a demanding/time consuming career
what are your motiviations for going into medicine?

my guess is this=>helping others with lots of personal interaction with a good salary

Funny - this is basically why my husband chose emergency medicine (well, not the only reason, but a big one).

There are some other specialties that are a lot easier on the home life, too. Derm, optho - also sometimes FM and peds (post-residency, and depending on the group).

No matter what you choose, though - residency will suck the life out of, well, life, for the most part.
