MA private school rankings

Hello, I am new to this forum. I am interested in finding out if there are any resources (books, websites, articles) that list the top private schools in the Boston area, starting in 7th grade. I know that Boston magazine has a list each year but I think it was retracted this year. And I saw a Forbes list from 2010 that listed that top NE prep schools. Thanks.

this website is your best resource, really. There’s tons of accumulated wisdom and helpful people here.

Are you looking for a boy or girl? co-ed or single sex? and boarding or day school? I’m happy to share my thoughts given those answers, and you will get a lot of other opinions too.

Thank you. I am looking for day only. Prefer all boy but would be open to coed if better school. RL is the first choice but I realize admissions are very competitive. I have heard that Belmont Hill is a similar tiered school. Is Nobles same tier as them? What about Xaverian and St. Sebastians? Lower right? I suppose I could go to all the schools websites and look this all up, so I really appreciate all of your time and input. Thank you! Glad that I found this site.

There are so many great day schools in the Boston area. Asking to rank them is a little like asking what’s your favorite ice cream flavor. It really depends on what you’re looking for. All the schools you listed are good schools, though most people seem to put Roxbury Latin above the others. I’d add Milton. It also depends on where you’re commuting from.

If you want all boy, then RL is by far your best choice. Belmont Hill is not as strong, but better than Sebs or Xaverian. If you’re open to co-ed, then I’d put at least Milton as being stronger than Belmont Hill, and probably Nobles and BB&N as well.

If you are looking at North Shore then you should consider Saint Johns Prep in Danvers. They are starting a middle school next year. It’s a beautiful school; more of a campus then some of the other Catholic schools. There is also BB and N and Rivers. Look at the schools in the ISL.

One thing to add…For Milton, 7th grade is not really an entry point. 6th grade is. Don’t know if that’s an option for you @ne3902, but Milton is a great school. May be worth considering applying this year, for 6th grade next year.

More new students enter in 6th than 7th, but 7th is an entry point.

@skieurope, we were told by Milton’s admissions department that they admitted no new students to 7th this year, 4 in 2013-14, and 2 in 2012-13. So, yes, they will accept applications for 7th, but there are very few slots. Most likely those spots are from students who leave, so it just depends on how many kids turn over. They don’t even accept applications for 8th. If the OP can apply for 6th, I would still think that would be worth considering for Milton.

we were told the same thing by Milton admissions, that they only expect to admit a few kids at most, possibly zero, for 7th grade next year.

ne3902 - I think your list is pretty accurate- RL, Belmont Hill, Nobles, St Sebs, Xaverian are all worth checking out. If you are convenient to Boston/Cambridge, that opens a few more…
