Hey I'm just wondering what people thought was easier to have for the eschool. I'm currently deciding and was just wanted to see if people thought one is preferable over the other for engineering assignments, etc.

UVa SEAS has the following information on computers for students entering in Aug 2013 (Mac’s are addressed towards the bottom of the page):
[UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science, 1st Yr PC Recommendations](http://infotech.seas.virginia.edu/firstyear/)

The following is a FAQ’s attachment regarding Mac’s:

Be sure to read the links blueiguana posted. With that said, it really comes down to what you are comfortable with. Personally I’d say get something lighter and with good battery life. If you’re a windows person, stick with that, if you’re a Mac person go the Mac route.

You may be somewhat “on your own” for support with a Mac as stated in the document, but you will have plenty of others there with you to help you in your self-support. Technically, you are fine with either. But do note that with a Mac you will need to purchase a copy of Windows as well, be comfortable dual booting, and be willing to maintain two separate operating systems.

The school tells us the PCs are highly recommended but a lot of students and esp. professors have Macs. If you choose not to install Windows on your Mac, you can always go to the library or labs to access whatever software/program you need.

A lot of people buy PCs through Cav Computers as well. I know many people who think that it iwasn’t worth the money. For me, getting it through UVa was a good decision because of the warranty. Throughout the past three years: I’ve gotten my computer fixed several times, had my battery and keyboard replaced, and my charger replaced twice – and I didn’t have to pay any extra fees to get it serviced/replaced. So, that’s something else to think about!

I would recommend getting the computer through UVA, especially or macs. I just had problems with my mac and the apple store did the repairs (750 dollars worth!) for free.

Definitely a good thing to have.

I know I’m replying late to this thread, but wherever I end up going to college this fall (most likely UVA or VT), I’m definitely getting a touchscreen Windows 8.1 U1 computer. I’m really excited to finally have my own laptop!
