recd the email offering admission.

Rejected from Mac. I wanted to get there, but…

Congratulations to all of you who got in though!

Update: Yup, got the email of rejection.

Congratulations to all those who are accepted. I graduated from Mac in 1976… yes that many years ago. It was a wonderful school then, and if anything it’s better now. My daughter ended up elsewhere, but she looked at Mac very seriously and had a great visit there. If you didn’t get in, then best wishes that you’ll find a great spot. I can’t believe it’s been a year since going through this with my D… and it feels so good to be on the other side… most of freshman year accomplished. Almost all of your will be in that situation in another year. Good luck also on deciding.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted! I got my letter a couple of days ago and was waitlisted. Mac is one of my top choices and I accepted being placed on the waitlist.

Received scholarship information today! (DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholarship). The letter is dated 3/18. postmarked 3/19, and we live about 12 miles from the campus. The letter says that if we completed need-based financial aid and provided full information, a financial aid eligibility notification should be received within “the next several days.”

I received that scholarship also! For 15k per year. Anyone know how this influenced need based aid? I would hope it reduced loans or work study. Also I just got an outside scholarship and it appears some of that helps but they reduce some of that from the need based grant.

@thirrdplanet Congrats! It seems as though the usual route is for merit scholarships to decrease the financial aid support, even when the merit scholarship is not from the college/university. Somebody probably has more real experience with this (I have none yet, but am about to find out, I hope, once Mac’s FA letter arrives). My understanding is that once a college determines what they think your family can pay, that amount is not decrease by any additional scholarship $$ you are awarded. Instead, the scholarship will replace some of the financial aid that the college originally planned to finance in another way. Does that make sense?

Got the acceptance letter today! This surely is great news after getting wait listed by WASHU:)

Now, 10 more to go haha…

Would they reduce the merit all from the need based grant or take a little off of loans and work study? I don’t see an advantage to the merit really if it doesn’t actually effect the package lol but let’s hope it does even a little!

Just got my letter in Hawaii
So excited, but I’m waiting on financial aid

D received FA package today. Not very good offer from college that claims to meet 100% need.
Regarding outside scholarships:
[Outside Scholarship Policy - Financial Aid - Macalester College](Outside Scholarship Policy - Financial Aid Office - Macalester College)
1.The first $500 you receive in outside scholarships will not impact the amount of your need-based grant aid from Macalester.
2.If you receive more than $500 in outside scholarships, half of the amount exceeding $500 will replace need-based grant aid from Macalester.
3.After the adjustments described above are made, Macalester will recalculate the maximum available Federal Stafford Loan and student employment eligibility remaining based on your FAFSA result.

Received very generous financial aid offer, mostly composed of grants and scholarships. Very pleased.

Not too happy with my award. Earlham would be almost 8k a year cheaper, a school that doesn’t claim to meet full aid.

waitlisted :(

Got a little 4k scholarship, but still waiting on aid :p

Very happy with my financial aid – much better than Grinnell! I’m becoming less and less confident of being admitted anywhere else, so Mac might just be my final decision.

@ NemesisNyx If Mac is your final decision, you’ve made a great one!

Well, I’ll still be holding onto hope for the waitlist for Carleton, as that’s still my top choice. And I’m still waiting to hear back from other colleges; my top choice that I haven’t heard from yet is probably Swarthmore. But Mac’s financial aid is very good, so it’s definitely gone up on my list. I’m visiting in 2 weeks, so that’ll really decide it for me. My biggest turn-off to Mac is location, actually (even though that’s a plus to a lot of people). I’m not that interested in being in a city.

Woah my grinnell award is much better than mac’s. I guess that goes to show how every school really does calculate it differently. I can’t justify paying so much more for macalester over grinnell or earlham.
